Recently, Marvel unveiled the cast for “Avengers: Endgame“, hinting at an X-Men involvement in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Marvel is broadening the multiverse with a return of several original actors from the Fox films that played a significant role in popularizing superhero movies, yet one actor was conspicuously missing.
In the upcoming movie “Avengers: Doomsday,” there won’t be Hugh Jackman despite his significant roles in previous “X-Men” films. This decision has sparked much debate among fans, but it’s beneficial for one key reason.
Avengers: Doomsday Features Many Original X-Men Actors
Audiences Will Be Hit With Nostalgia
As a movie enthusiast, I eagerly awaited the cast announcement for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, a process that felt interminable but ultimately delivered on generating excitement. While many of the names announced were predictable, it was with the inclusion of the X-Men where I got an unexpected thrill. Marvel dropped some major news with Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen returning as Magneto, James Marsden back as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer stepping into Beast’s shoes, Rebecca Romijn once more embodying Mystique, and Alan Cumming bringing Nightcrawler to life. To top it all off, they revealed that Channing Tatum would be reprising his role as Gambit, a character he played in both Deadpool and Wolverine. This unexpected appearance of the popular mutants has left audiences buzzing, as most were not expecting to see them until after Avengers: Secret Wars, and even then, they anticipated a new cast.
Despite a few key figures like Halle Berry’s Storm being absent, it’s still thrilling to know that numerous actors from the Fox X-Men series are expected to participate. This move by Marvel seems aimed at generating excitement for Avengers: Doomsday, and it certainly succeeded in doing so. However, the lack of Hugh Jackman’s involvement in the reveal was another hot topic, given his previous appearances in the franchise.
Marvel Needs To Allow The X-Men To Thrive
Wolverine Often Overshadowed Them All
Leaving Jackman out of “Avengers: Doomsday” could be seen as unusual given his prominence in Fox’s “X-Men” films, but this absence might actually be beneficial. If Wolverine were included, he would undoubtedly be the main focus, and discussions would center around him reuniting with Deadpool again. The attention on Wolverine could overshadow other characters, making it less ideal for him to feature in most, if not all, group scenes.
The Fox movies relied heavily on Wolverine, which contributed to the creation of an iconic superhero character. However, this over-reliance may have also limited the screen time and development of other X-Men characters.
In Wolverine’s presence, characters like Cyclops often got overshadowed, leaving fans underappreciative of the full potential and power of the X-Men team members. It’s unfortunate because the X-Men roster boasts numerous extraordinary characters who deserve their moment in the limelight. Leaving Wolverine out of a specific movie would provide an opportunity for Marvel to highlight each character’s unique abilities, fostering the team’s collective strength, which is crucial to the X-Men’s essence. By showcasing each character individually and as part of the group within the MCU, Marvel can build excitement around future recasts, ensuring fans are eager to witness these characters beyond Jackman reprising his role again.
Marvel Obviously Has Other Plans For Wolverine
Hugh Jackman Will Be Back In A Featured Role
Leaving Jackman out among the other mutants in the film seems beneficial for the current X-Men roles and potentially advantageous for Wolverine’s future as well. It’s not just Wolverine who is absent from this movie, as characters like Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Deadpool are also missing. There has been much debate about Wolverine’s future, and it seems evident that he will play a significant role in the future. This could be in a film with Hulk, another project featuring Deadpool, or perhaps an introduction of the new X-Men team by Marvel when they decide to do so. Given that Marvel is unlikely to rely solely on the original Fox X-Men lineup as their main stars in the long run, it’s possible that Wolverine will have a substantial role to play moving forward.
Rather than including Wolverine in the same group initially, it would be wiser to isolate him for a special treatment upon his return. To make this happen, he could assume the role as leader of the new X-Men squad. It’s important to avoid placing him alongside other characters within this cast, as it might lead to confusion. As a popular actor, Jackman truly shines when portraying Wolverine. By keeping him unique, we can emphasize the significance of his presence in the revamped X-Men ensemble, which he’s likely to be part of. Although excluding him may diminish Avengers: Doomsday slightly due to his absence, the film can take that risk given its impressive lineup of stars already.
