Wonder Woman Game Canceled, 3 Studios Shut Down

Summary

  • Warner Bros. has canceled the Wonder Woman video game and shut down three studios.
  • The project faced troubled development, with little updates over the years.
  • Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB San Diego have been shut down.

It was announced that the open-world “Wonder Woman” video game has been scrapped, and as a result, three studios under Warner Bros. Games have ceased operations. The “Wonder Woman” game was initially unveiled at The Game Awards in 2021, but since then, there’s been little to no information about its development.

The sneak peek for the “Wonder Woman” video game demonstrated the main character brandishing her famous Lasso of Truth, and rumors have circulated that the game might incorporate the Nemesis system from Monolith’s “Middle-earth” series. However, details about the project remained scarce over time. Following years of development struggles, it appears the team behind the “Wonder Woman” game has disbanded and the studio has been closed down.

As reported by Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, it appears that he was the first to announce the news about the cancelled development of the much-anticipated “Wonder Woman” video game. Schreier also claims that Warner Bros. Games has recently closed down three of its studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and Player First Games. Notably, Player First Games was responsible for the unsuccessful free-to-play game, “MultiVersus,” which bears a resemblance to “Super Smash Bros.

Multiple sources have portrayed the development process of the Wonder Woman game as quite dismal over time. Whispers in the industry hinted that the game might be a live-service title, or include aspects of live-service, which caused apprehension among fans. The dearth of substantial updates about the game throughout the years was also concerning, though the termination of the Wonder Woman project and the closure of Monolith Productions remains unexpectedly startling.

Established in 1994, Monolith Productions later became a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Entertainment in 2004. Under the Warner Bros. label, Monolith launched several notable titles such as the first two installments of the F.E.A.R. series, the Condemned duology, and Middle-earth: Shadow of War and Shadow of Mordor. In 2017, the studio released its last game, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, which received positive reviews but didn’t quite match the success of its predecessor.

Warner Bros. has experienced several significant setbacks in the video game industry over the past few years. The release of “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” was a major blow to the company, and “MultiVersus” is currently teetering on the brink of closure following numerous years in development. However, they’ve also enjoyed triumphs such as the extraordinary sales figures for “Hogwarts Legacy” and the enduring popularity of the “Mortal Kombat” series. In the pipeline are rumored sequels to “Hogwarts Legacy” and a new “Batman” game from Rocksteady, but details on both remain scarce as we speak.
