Wonder Woman isnt an Arkhamverse Game But Should Feel Like One

As a lifelong fan of Wonder Woman and a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my gaming belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and nostalgia when it comes to Monolith’s upcoming take on our favorite Amazonian princess. The tantalizing glimpses we’ve had so far have fueled the fires of speculation, with many of us hoping for a game that pays homage to the Arkham series in more ways than one.

For over three years now, the development status of Monolith’s Wonder Woman has become as legendary as Princess Diana herself. So far, the biggest leak about it is all that’s been circulating, if there’s any truth to it, and since its teaser at The Game Awards 2021, no official updates have been revealed. In the absence of concrete news, speculation has fueled excitement for Wonder Woman, with many assuming Monolith might incorporate elements from their Middle-earth games, such as Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, into Wonder Woman.

A significant aspect of this assumption is the expectation that the fighting style in Wonder Woman might resemble the fluid combat system found in the Middle-earth games, which borrowed from the Arkham series. In those games, Talion and Celebrimbor’s combined abilities resulted in impressive freeflow combat, such as Talion’s sword slicing through orcs and uruks during combo finishers, or Celebrimbor’s spectral shade blocking a second enemy when players countered two opponents simultaneously. Since Wonder Woman doesn’t have Batman’s tactical gear inventory, it is hoped that the game will primarily draw inspiration from the Arkhamverse’s approach to progression, which was gradual and well-paced.

Arkham Games’ Progression is Defined by Traversal- and Combat-Oriented Gadget Distribution

As a devoted fan, I’d like to emphasize that the Arkham series isn’t just about unlocking skills through XP, it’s also about acquiring an array of ingenious gadgets that drive both the narrative and Batman’s capabilities forward. Unlike other games where Batman starts off with a fully-stocked utility belt, in the Arkham universe, his arsenal isn’t always complete at the start. The reasons for this vary – sometimes he’s caught off guard and has to navigate the game’s events in a single night, while other times he doesn’t have a gadget yet because it hasn’t been invented until that specific game. Regardless of the reason, we, as players, begin with a few gadgets, and as the story unfolds, we either find or construct new ones to aid us in our journey.

In the event that Batman always prepares for any potential scenario, it’s logical he’d pack every tool he might require initially. However, as Batman: Arkham City suggests, this would necessitate a larger utility belt and potentially slow him down. Yet, it remains captivating and enjoyable to receive new tools incrementally in the players’ arsenal, and it also allows players time to become acquainted with each new gadget before another is obtained.

In combat, it’s advantageous that certain tools like the Gel Launcher in Batman: Arkham Shadow require a bit of practice to master when and how to use them offensively. The key with the Gel Launcher is timing – players must shoot the explosive gel at the ground and then find the perfect instant to detonate it, often between parries or evasions. Moreover, gadgets like the Disruptor in Batman: Arkham Knight are so intricate that their effectiveness relies heavily on careful decision-making by the player regarding which weapons, items, or hazards to manipulate for maximum impact.

Batman’s Arkhamverse Progression Needs to Open a Floodgate for Monolith’s Wonder Woman

To enrich the gameplay with various strategies, it’s plausible for Wonder Woman to utilize any of her famous weapons and artifacts at her disposal, such as a sword, shield, bracers, or a lasso that uncovers truths. Instead of starting the game with all these items, it could be more engaging if she acquires new ones as the game unfolds.

The Lasso of Truth, golden in hue, could arguably be Wonder Woman’s most potent weapon. It serves her well not only as a moderate choice in battle, but also grants her the power to extract truth from others. Keeping this artifact hidden until a crucial moment might benefit Monolith, intensifying its impact on both storytelling and gameplay. Crafting such decisions will significantly influence Wonder Woman‘s success, making us curious about how the game’s development will unfold as more details emerge.
