Unfortunate events such as studio closures and large-scale dismissals have become a frequent occurrence in the gaming industry, seldom coming as a surprise. However, the recent closure of Monolith, the developer behind “Wonder Woman”, has been quite unexpected, much like the sudden shutdowns of Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks last year. Monolith is renowned for creating innovative games like F.E.A.R., Condemned: Criminal Origins, and the Shadow of Mordor series.
Fans were quite eager to discover how the company would utilize its extensive background, skilled workforce, and creativity in crafting the game around the relatively scarce modern appearance of Wonder Woman, a character who has been largely missing from leading roles in gaming. Monolith’s renowned enemy AI design, proficiency in melee combat systems, and penchant for daring ideas could have resulted in an unparalleled Wonder Woman gaming experience. Although it’s unfortunate that the developer won’t be able to finish this project, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Wonder Woman will never get another chance to shine in the gaming world.
Wonder Woman Deserves to Helm Her Own Standalone Game
Wonder Woman Has a Lot of Potential as a Video Game Lead
When Monolith was at the helm of Wonder Woman, there was much debate about how they would utilize their signature knack for experimentation and inventive game design. Yet, even without groundbreaking elements like the Nemesis system in Shadow of Mordor, a game featuring Wonder Woman could still be highly engaging, with potential for distinctive mechanics and expansive gameplay systems. Some intriguing gameplay aspects that Wonder Woman might offer include:
- Super speed and strength
- Weapon proficiency
- Arm cuff deflection
It’s quite simple to envision an intense melee combat system constructed around Wonder Woman’s various powers and martial abilities. This system might incorporate defensive mechanics like parrying, combined with distinct fighting styles and weapon options, creating a solid foundation for an action-RPG game. However, it’s essential to remember that Wonder Woman is not just physically powerful but also intellectually sharp. Her intelligence and diplomatic skills could be the foundation for investigative or social simulation-style gameplay, adding diversity to her storyline. Moreover, her unique array of gear, including the famous Lasso of Truth, offers ample opportunities for creative design.
Even Without Monolith, Warner Bros. Should Push Ahead with Wonder Woman Before Too Long
Regrettably, Monolith’s version of Wonder Woman won’t be released, but this doesn’t mean it can’t spawn something new. It’s been suggested that Warner Bros. is trying to play it safe after the disappointing releases of Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League – games that fell short of expectations, to say the least. This assumption seems plausible given an internal email from JB Perette, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, where he clearly outlines the company’s focus on expanding existing franchises.
Although Warner Bros. might appear more cautious following games like Suicide Squad, venturing into a solo Wonder Woman game may not be as daring as one might think. In truth, being excessively careful can pose risks in the entertainment sector, since even the most popular and successful franchises can experience a decline if they don’t evolve sufficiently over time. For instance, Batman: Arkham could potentially return in the near future, but if Warner Bros. becomes too dependent on it without introducing fresh, innovative concepts, fans may eventually grow tired of it.
It’s logical to continue building excitement for a Wonder Woman video game, given the audience’s interest, which has been piqued. After all, the character has never been more popular in mainstream media, thanks to the successful DC films, despite their occasional inconsistencies. As gaming continues to rival blockbuster movies in popularity, it seems wise to leverage a character as well-known and full of potential as Wonder Woman.
