World of Warcraft Developers Have Formed A Union

As a longtime fan of World of Warcraft and someone who has followed the gaming industry closely for years, I am thrilled to see this historic union formation at Blizzard. The announcement that over 500 developers have come together to form the World of Warcraft Game Makers Guild – CWA Union (WoWGG-CWA) is a significant step forward in securing better working conditions and fair compensation for these talented individuals.

Approximately 500 developers at Blizzard, comprising the entire World of Warcraft team, have officially come together to form a union, according to an announcement made on Wednesday.

The Communications Workers of America (CWA) has revealed the establishment of the World of Warcraft Game Makers Guild – CWA Union (WoWGG-CWA) in partnership with Microsoft’s owned organization. This new union encompasses all designers, engineers, producers, artists, quality assurance testers, and other game developers at Blizzard. It marks the “initial comprehensive union at Activision Blizzard and the biggest comprehensive union at a Microsoft-owned production site.”

“At World of Warcraft, we’ve only scratched the surface of what we can achieve, according to Eric Lanham, a Test Analyst and WoWGG-CWA member, in a recent statement. He and his team are setting out on a mission to negotiate better compensation, benefits, and job security through unionization. They believe that a strong labor agreement will benefit not only employees but also the studio and fans who expect a top-notch gaming experience.”

Approximately 1,750 employees across Microsoft’s studios have recently joined the WoWGG-CWA union. Last week, it was publicly announced that Bethesda was the initial Microsoft studio to completely unionize.

“This hard-earned victory, resulting from years of groundwork laid since the Game Workers Unite movement’s inception at GDC, underscores a strong determination for change, according to Tom Smith, Senior Director of Organizing at CWA. The unionization of one of the most prosperous games signifies the growing influence of worker unity across the gaming industry, encompassing major studios like SEGA and Bethesda as well as independent developers.”

Activision-Blizzard has yet to publicly comment on the WoWGG-CWA formation.
