As a die-hard World of Warcraft fan with over a decade of gaming experience under my belt, I must say that the latest addition to WoW – Xal’atath’s Rusty Coin in The War Within expansion – has me absolutely thrilled!
Players engaging in fishing within Dalaran’s fountain during “The War Within” opening scenario might stumble upon a coin linked to Xal’atath – an Easter egg reference. This hidden treasure is reminiscent of earlier expansions, specifically “Wrath of the Lich King” and “Legion”, where players could catch coins associated with various World of Warcraft characters at that very fountain.
In the debut of its expansion, World of Warcraft is welcoming “The War Within” with great fanfare. Within the initial hour of play, players will encounter Dalaran under siege by Xal’atath, the central villain from “The War Within”. Despite their determined resistance, both promotional materials and beta tests have suggested that Dalaran won’t be left intact in Khaz Algar.
However, WoW fan Lazey recently discovered that the opening scenario of the expansion has a specific callback to an iconic feature of Dalaran. The intro scenario where Dalaran is attacked by Xal’atath and Queen Ansurek, the first raid boss of WoW: The War Within, was recently available for testing in the beta, and during one of the last phases, players can access the fountain in the Eventide. Should fans try to fish there, they will find a single item: Xal’atath’s Rusty Coin. Wowhead corroborated that the item appears to be a guaranteed pull on the first fishing attempt at the fountain, regardless of skill, so picking up this memento, and reading its malevolent message, is not hard.

As a long-time World of Warcraft player, I find the new feature introduced in the latest expansion particularly exciting. The ability to fish for coins with wishes from beloved heroes and villains of WoW directly from the fountain in Dalaran is reminiscent of my early days in Azeroth. Collecting all these coins rewards players with two achievements: The Coin Master and The Wish Remover, which are a nice touch for dedicated fans like myself.
Players won’t have to wait much longer to obtain Xal’atath’s coin themselves! Access to the early version of WoW: The War Within begins at 3 PM PDT today (soon as we speak), for those who purchased the Epic Edition. Four days later, the game will be available for all players.
For those fortunate enough to visit Gamescom, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the Escape from Dalaran VR adventure at the Blizzard booth. This experience will last until August 25th. Regrettably, you won’t be able to fish for Xal’atath’s coin during this time, but you can embark on a four-dimensional flight through Dalaran and catch a sneak peek of Azj-Kahet, the domain of the Nerubians in World of Warcraft.
