The beta version of World of Warcraft: Midnight is currently experiencing significant lag. It appears this is due to the more realistic behavior given to fish in the game. A high concentration of these aquatic creatures near the shores of Quel’Thalas and Zul’Aman seems to be causing unexpected performance problems for World of Warcraft.
The World of Warcraft: Midnight beta officially began on November 11th, bringing the game a step closer to its expected release in early 2026. This beta includes almost all of the Midnight content, including access to the four new zones: Eversong Woods, Zul’Aman, Harandar, and the Voidstorm.
New Fish NPC Behaviors Contribute to WoW: Midnight Beta Lag
Players testing the Midnight beta have been experiencing significant lag, and the cause is unusual. According to World of Warcraft producer Zorbrix, developers have been investigating performance issues since the beta launched. They’ve discovered that a large number of fish are a major contributor to the problem. Improvements to how non-player characters (NPCs) behave in World of Warcraft, combined with the many coastlines and fish in the Midnight zones, are collectively slowing down the game for everyone.
The problems aren’t likely caused by just one thing. Zorbrix explained that several factors are contributing to slower server performance and higher memory use. Fixing one bug seems to create two new ones, creating a snowball effect. The developers are working hard to resolve these issues, but it may take some time before the beta version runs smoothly. They hope to have everything fixed before the World of Warcraft Midnight Pre-Patch test on November 17th.
Despite the recent problems, many players are excited about the changes to how non-player characters (NPCs) behave in the game. Unlike most online games where NPCs just stand around, those in World of Warcraft now move around, patrol areas, hunt, rest, gather resources, and even fight each other. It will be fascinating to see how this makes the new areas in Midnight and future content feel more realistic and engaging.
Testing for Midnight has revealed several issues, ranging from awkward character poses in World of Warcraft to players falling through the floor in locations like the Silvermoon Barber Shop. Developers are still working to fix these bugs. Players interested in helping can join the beta test through the WoW website, or they can secure access by pre-ordering the Epic Edition of Midnight.
