Ion Hazzikostas, the game director for World of Warcraft, explained that the game was limiting access to certain player-created modifications (addons) because some of them gave players an unfair advantage. However, World of Warcraft will still let players use addons to personalize how the game looks and functions, as long as they don’t affect gameplay balance.
The new Midnight expansion for World of Warcraft is causing debate because Blizzard is changing how addons (player-created modifications) work. While addons aren’t being removed, Blizzard is limiting what information they can access during battles. Interestingly, some recent features added to the game, like the Cooldown Manager and One-Button Rotation, were originally popular addon features. Blizzard’s goal with these changes is to ensure that addons don’t give players an unfair advantage in combat, no matter how skilled they are.
World of Warcraft Remains Committed to Midnight Addon Curbing
The recent changes in Midnight have temporarily halted updates to popular addons like ElvUI and WeakAuras, but Blizzard is sticking to its vision for the game. In a recent post, Blizzard’s Hazzikostas acknowledged that limiting addon functionality will be an adjustment for some World of Warcraft players, but believes the game needs to be balanced so players have everything they need to succeed without relying on addons. While some visual customizations might stop working, Blizzard is planning to add new tools that will allow players and addon creators to continue personalizing the game’s interface within the new Midnight system.
I was really glad to hear Hazzikostas talk about how they’re trying to make sure the new encounters in Midnight aren’t instantly solved by addons – that’s happened before and it can ruin the fun. He understands we’re all a little worried about how Midnight will stack up against past WoW expansions, which is good to know. The team is even letting addon creators customize how things like our Holy Power bar look, which is a nice touch. And the best part? They’re promising to keep tweaking bosses and the UI based on what players are saying in the beta, all the way up to the 2026 launch. That makes me feel a lot better about things!
Despite these changes, World of Warcraft players will get one last update – Patch 11.2.7 arriving on December 2nd – that will allow them to continue using addons as they currently are. As of today, there’s no confirmed release date for World of Warcraft: Midnight.
