World of Warcraft Getting Rid of Major Feature after 13 Years in Midnight

World of Warcraft is simplifying its pet system in Midnight. Instead of battling to capture pets, you’ll now be able to catch wild pets with just one click. Players can still collect a variety of pets in Midnight, but after more than 13 years, World of Warcraft is removing the battling component of pet collecting.

Pet battles were added to World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria in 2012. This mini-game, similar to Pokemon, expanded on the existing feature where players could have companion pets. With this system, players can catch and train wild pets, then battle non-player characters (NPCs) and other players to earn rewards like in-game currency, achievements, and experience points.

Battle Pets are Being Removed in World of Warcraft: Midnight

It seems that World of Warcraft is removing pet battles with its upcoming expansion. Although wild pets are still present in the World of Warcraft: Midnight alpha, players can no longer battle them. Instead, right-clicking on these creatures now automatically cages them, adding them directly to your inventory. Furthermore, these pets can’t be leveled up or used in pet battles. WoW creator MrGM recorded a video of this new feature and posted it on Twitter.

Despite some players hoping the pet battling system hadn’t been fully added to the alpha version yet, that doesn’t appear to be the reason. World of Warcraft streamer Beartrice questioned game director Ion Hazzikostas during a group interview, and he explained that pets will be available in Midnight, but the battling feature won’t be included, as not many players were using it. Supporting this, the pet-collecting achievement in Midnight labels the pets as “wild pets” instead of “battle pets” like past achievements, and currently, none of the new zone’s pets require battling to obtain.

Just to clarify, the current pet battle system isn’t going anywhere. You’ll still be able to access all the creatures, challenges, and pet battle content you’ve enjoyed in World of Warcraft. However, it looks like Blizzard won’t be adding any new pet battles to the game going forward, meaning future pets won’t receive the stats or abilities needed to participate.

The K’aresh zone added in World of Warcraft Patch 11.2 didn’t include any collectible battle pets or achievements, and this worried some players about the future of the feature. Sadly, it looks like those concerns were justified. We don’t know for sure why Blizzard removed this content; some believe it’s another consequence of WoW’s faster update schedule, while others think it might be a way to avoid issues with Nintendo’s recent Pokemon patent. Either way, it appears that fans of pet battles in World of Warcraft won’t be receiving any new content going forward.
