World of Warcraft Has Disappointing News About Delves in Patch 11.1

Key Takeaways

  • Brann will be the only Delve companion in WoW’s The War Within, staying until the next expansion.
  • Players keep Brann to maintain progress and avoid resetting the companion each season.
  • Additional Delves and boss instances with rewards are coming in Patch 11.1, where Brann can be a tank.

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of WoW under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions about this latest announcement regarding Brann and Delves in World of Warcraft: The War Within.

In the upcoming adventure “The War Within”, Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed that Brann will be the sole companion for players in Delves. Initially, they intended to introduce a new character each season, but due to plans for the expansion named “Midnight”, Brann will remain as a permanent companion in World of Warcraft until then.

In the game “The War Within,” a fresh type of instance called Delves was introduced. These Delves can be finished either alone or with others, accompanied by an NPC ally. At the beginning, this ally was Brann Bronzebeard, who is renowned for his exploration skills and is the younger brother to Magni and Muradin. However, it was previously mentioned that they would change the companion each season of the expansion.

It appears that World of Warcraft has decided not to remove the Brann character feature in Delves, as initially planned. In a recent interview with content creators The Comeback Kids, WoW game director Ion Hazzikostas confirmed that Brann will stay in both Patch 11.1 and throughout “The War Within”. Hazzikostas expressed concern about replacing Brann because players have invested time leveling him up and customizing his abilities. He felt it would be unfair to reset progress each season, so instead, players can keep Brann as their companion until the release of “Midnight”.

Brann Is the Only Delve Companion in World of Warcraft: The War Within

From a logistics standpoint, this makes sense. While adding new Delve companions would add variety, replacing all the hard work players have done leveling Brann after a few short months wouldn’t feel great. Some fans suggest keeping both characters or sharing progress between them, but it seems these solutions did not fit with Blizzard’s idea for how additional Delve companions would work. It may come as a disappointment to players, but it seems World of Warcraft will only get one Delve companion every couple of years for the foreseeable future.

One concern when switching teammates is that players have advanced Brann to a high level, fully customized and optimized. Swapping him out seems like losing all the progress made on him.

That said, there is still some good news about Delves in Patch 11.1. Three new instances – two additional Delves and a final boss Delve similar to the WoW: The War Within Season 1 Zevkir encounter – are coming, featuring achievements, rewards, and goblin-themed curios. Brann will also be able to become a tank, allowing the Delve companion to fill any role.

As a gamer, I can’t wait to find out more about who I might be teaming up with in the instances of World of Warcraft: Midnight set in Quel’thalas. Could it be legendary Elven explorers like Naleidea Rivergleam or Elise Starseeker? For now, all we can do is guess how the companion system will evolve during the Worldsoul Saga and beyond.
