In World of Warcraft, mailboxes are now more than just decorations! The new ‘Midnight’ update lets them actually work, making it the first housing item with a real purpose in the game. This is a big step, and Blizzard plans to add other useful items like repair shops and crafting stations to player homes in the future.
After a long wait, players can now decorate personal housing in World of Warcraft as of Patch 11.2.7, which is currently in early access. The game features thousands of collectible decorations—everything from furniture like beds and chairs to collectibles like trophies and even functional items like mailboxes. While many decorations are purely cosmetic, some offer small interactions—like secret compartments in bookshelves or chairs you can sit in—the only items with a practical use are pots, which are used for cooking.
World of Warcraft Housing Mailboxes Will Work in Midnight
A recent discovery in the beta version of World of Warcraft: Midnight shows that decorative mailboxes will soon become fully functional. Content creator Persephonae noticed that these items, previously just for looks, can now be used to send and receive in-game mail. Blizzard confirmed on Twitter that this change is intentional and will be implemented in Midnight, meaning all mailbox decorations – both current and future – will work just like regular mailboxes found in towns and cities.

- Stampwhistle’s Postal Portal (Northerend Enchanting)
- Wolvar Postbag (Northerend Leatherworking)
- Ren’dorei Postal Repository (Unknown source, not yet available)
- Thunder Totem Mailbox (Unknown source, not yet available)
- Tuskarr Postbag (Unknown source, not yet available, may not be added)
Blizzard initially designed the in-game mailboxes in World of Warcraft to be non-functional. They wanted to encourage players to continue visiting the game’s main cities and interact with each other. The idea was that if players could access everything they needed from home, they’d be less likely to explore the wider game world.
Image via Blizzard Players have found several ways to access mail outside of traditional mailboxes, including toys like the Ohuna Perch, pets like the Radiant Lynx Whistle, the Nightborne’s racial ability, and even the expensive Gilded Brutosaur mount currently for sale in World of Warcraft. Since players can already check their mail in many locations, it’s logical that the game would extend that functionality to mailboxes used in player housing, a feature the community specifically requested.
Could World of Warcraft Make Other Utility Decor in the Future?
Image via Blizzard Having working mailboxes is already a great improvement, but it opens up exciting possibilities for how other useful items could be added to the game as decorations. Things like banks, vendors, repair shops, pet stables, auction houses, and even transmogrification stations could potentially be created using mounts, toys, potions, or pets. Now that functional mailbox decorations are a reality, it’s reasonable to expect other helpful features to appear as decorations in World of Warcraft in the future.
Image via Blizzard The game could take this idea even further. World of Warcraft already includes decorative items like anvils and workstations that could easily be used for crafting, smelting, or creating items. Although not all professions currently have portable stations like the Thermal Anvil, that item shows it’s technically possible. While it might not be a high priority, many players would be excited to have functional crafting areas they can set up in their player homes.
Mailbox decorations are expected to become fully usable when the next World of Warcraft expansion launches on March 2nd. However, they might start working sooner, possibly as early as January 20th with the World of Warcraft: Midnight pre-expansion update. Currently, there’s no indication that decorations will be used for anything beyond mailboxes in the game, but since this is a new system, it’s possible more features could be added later.
