The latest update for World of Warcraft, called Midnight, is now detailed in full patch notes. Arriving January 20th, this pre-expansion update brings a revamped user interface, housing options, adjustments to character stats and item levels, changes to how add-ons work, and significant updates to every class in World of Warcraft.
The new World of Warcraft expansion, launching March 2nd, continues the Worldsoul Saga. Players will work to prevent Xal’atath from taking control of the Sunwell. The update raises the level cap to 90 and introduces four new areas to explore, including updated versions of Eversong Woods and Zul’Aman, along with several new dungeons and raids.
World of Warcraft: Midnight is Almost Here
Fans of World of Warcraft won’t have to wait long to experience the changes coming with Midnight. The pre-expansion update launches in WoW on January 20th, and Blizzard has released the patch notes early to help players prepare. A major part of this update is a significant adjustment to stats and item levels – actually, the fourth stat and third item level adjustment in WoW history. Players can expect to see their health and damage numbers drop considerably, though the goal is to keep overall combat effectiveness roughly the same. As with past updates, some unexpected issues with how things scale are possible.
A special leveling boost called Winds of Mysterious Fortune and the Twilight Ascension pre-patch event start on January 27th and will last until the game launches with Midnight.
This update also introduces several improvements to the user interface. The new Journeys interface makes it easier to follow your progress, and we’ve added accessibility and raid features – like audio cues for combat, damage meters, boss alerts, and updated nameplates and raid frames – to help with challenging content. We’re also significantly limiting combat addons in this update, and these new features are designed to replace some of the functionality lost from addons that won’t work with World of Warcraft: Midnight.

A major update to the Transmogrification system is coming to World of Warcraft with the Pre-Expansion patch, making it easier than ever to customize your character’s appearance. Instead of transmogging individual items, you’ll create full Outfits by assigning appearances to each gear slot. Once you pay a one-time fee to create an Outfit, you can switch between looks instantly and for free – no more trips to a transmog vendor! The system can even automatically change your Outfit based on where you are, what you’re doing, or your character’s specialization. You can buy up to 50 Outfit slots, and all slots are available to every character on your account.
Image via Blizzard Okay, so the housing system in World of Warcraft is officially live now with the latest pre-expansion update! I can finally start building! They’ve added some cool neighborhood stuff called Endeavors to Founder’s Point and Razorwind Shores – basically, monthly events for everyone in the area. And awesome news for Night Elf and Blood Elf fans – we finally get proper housing exteriors to match our races! They’ve also raised the housing level cap to 9, which unlocks even more customization options and lets you build bigger places as you level it up. It’s looking really good so far!
Over 40,000 Words of World of Warcraft Class Changes
Most of the updates in this patch focus on changes to character classes. All 13 classes in World of Warcraft have had significant adjustments to their talent trees – all 39 specializations – to simplify gameplay, reduce the number of abilities players need to manage, and introduce new Apex Talents that become available as you level up towards 90. These class changes make up about 90% of the patch notes, and that’s before even looking at the changes specifically for player-versus-player combat.
World of Warcraft is getting a brand new way to play with the addition of the Devourer Demon Hunter, its 40th specialization. This new option focuses on dealing damage from a distance, offering a different style for the typically close-combat Demon Hunter class. Plus, Void Elf players can now become Demon Hunters by completing a quick quest!
World of Warcraft: Midnight Patch Pre-Expansion Update Notes (January 20, 2026)
Azeroth is beginning to feel the effects of the coming darkness with the release of the Midnight pre-expansion update on January 20th. Players will be able to check out the redesigned user interface, try out changes to how combat works for every class, experience the Demon Hunter Devourer storyline, and discover other new features.
DEMON HUNTER DEVOURER SPECIALIZATION AND VOID ELF DEMON HUNTERS
The Devourer is a new Demon Hunter specialization that draws power from the Void, unlike other Demon Hunters who use Fel energy. This glaive-wielding spellcaster fights from a mid-range distance, maintaining the fast-paced movement Demon Hunters are known for, and focuses on collecting souls and unleashing powerful spells. Customize your playstyle with specializations and Hero Talents, allowing you to switch to close-combat and deliver devastating attacks.
Demon Hunters are getting a new specialization and, with it, a new Hero Talent tree called Annihilator. Both Devourer and Vengeance Demon Hunters will be able to use this tree. Additionally, Devourer Demon Hunters will now have access to the Scarred Hero Talent tree, previously known as Fel Scarred.
I’m excited that with the new update, I’ll be able to unlock the Void Elf Demon Hunter – it looks like there’s a quick questline I need to do to get it, which is awesome!
TRANSMOGRIFICATION UPDATES
We’ve completely updated the Transmogrification system! Now, appearances are saved to your gear slots instead of specific items, meaning your transmogs will stay put even when you switch to new equipment.
Players can save and easily switch between many different armor styles, called outfits. You begin with two free outfit slots, and can buy more with in-game gold. These outfits are available for all your characters and can be accessed directly from your action bar, letting you change your appearance quickly and for free, without needing to find a special vendor.
Situations is a new feature that smartly adjusts your character’s outfit to match your current activity. Whether you’re adventuring in a dungeon, exploring the game world, or just hanging out at home, you’ll always look the part!
HOUSING UPDATES
Get ready for Endeavors in your neighborhood! These are monthly events where everyone in your housing community works together on themed activities – things like crafting, completing quests, or running dungeons. By participating, you’ll unlock special shops, decorations, and a unique currency called Community Coupons, all to make your neighborhood even more beautiful.
Players on the Alliance side can now decorate their homes with classic Night Elf stonework and purple wood, while Horde players can use golden details and red crystals inspired by the Blood Elves to personalize their spaces.
You can now upgrade your houses to level 9, which unlocks even more features and ways to customize them. At level 8, houses also get access to medium-sized exterior options.
Additionally, there are many changes to housing in this update, listed below.
USER INTERFACE UPDATES
The User Interface is getting a big update with exciting new features and more ways to customize it. We’ve redesigned raid frames to be clearer and added better options for scaling the display. You’ll also be able to set up how information and damage meters look directly within the game, tailoring them to your preferences without needing to install extra add-ons. For details on changes to things like nameplates, damage meters, and boss alerts, check out our earlier article.
DAMAGE METERS
We’ve added Damage Meters to the game with the latest Midnight update! This new feature lets you track how much damage and healing you and your teammates are doing in combat. It provides stats for individuals, parties, and raids, helping you improve your performance whether you’re tackling challenging content or just want to see how you’re doing. It’s useful for everyone, from those aiming for higher-level Mythic+ keys to players who simply want to monitor their progress.
Take a look at some of the features coming with Damage Meters:
- It can be enabled under Options > Gameplay Enhancements > Damage Meter.
- Categories include Damage Done, Damage Per Second (DPS), Damage Taken, Avoidable Damage Taken, Healing Done, Healing Per Second (HPS), Interrupts, and Dispels.
- Customization settings for the Damage Meter are available in Edit Mode allowing the adjustment of settings such as bar dimensions, presentation styles, visibility rules, and class and spec visualization.
- Supports displaying up to three windows simultaneously. Similarly to chat windows, the primary window can be moved, resized, and customized in Edit Mode, while secondary windows are adjustable outside of Edit Mode. Customizations set in Edit Mode are applied to all windows.
- Tracks combat statistics for individual encounters as well as a summary of all encounters (up to the last 30 encounters).
- The Damage Meter’s data will persist through a disconnect or log out in the 12.0.1 update.
- Clicking on an individual entry in the damage meter will open a secondary window containing a per-spell breakdown.
BOSS WARNINGS
We’re also introducing “Boss Warnings” with this update, a new feature designed to help with boss fights in dungeons and raids. It includes two types of alerts: a Boss Timeline that clearly shows the order of upcoming boss abilities, highlighting when each one is about to happen, and text alerts that pop up on screen to warn you about Minor, Medium, and Critical dangers – similar to how raid warnings work.
Boss Warnings are turned on automatically, but you can adjust more settings under Options > Gameplay Enhancements > Boss Warnings. You can also change how the Boss Timeline and Boss Text Alerts look – including their size, position, and transparency – using Edit Mode.
COOLDOWN MANAGER UPDATES
We’ve been working hard to improve the Cooldown Manager based on your suggestions, and we’re excited to share a bunch of new features in this update!
Lets take a look:
- Added additional new buffs and player auras.
- Any spells and buffs that were removed or are no longer relevant to a specialization have also been removed from the Cooldown Manager.
- Players can now save multiple layouts as well as share or import other player layouts.
- Right-clicking a cooldown in the Cooldown Settings window will allow players the option to assign a sound and/or visual alert to an event type.
- Up to 3 alerts can be assigned to a cooldown.
- Text-to-Speech is available as an option for Sound Alerts.
- Alert sounds can be previewed by clicking the music note icon near the sound name in the list or in the context menu of existing alerts.
- Visual alerts including “marching ants” and “flash” can be assigned to an event types in various colors.
- Added support for displaying debuffs on the player’s current target in Cooldown Manager.
- Border colors indicate the debuff type (magic, poison, etc.).
- Some damage overtime spell debuffs can carry over some of their remaining duration when they are refreshed. When their remaining duration is in a state that all of it will be carried over when refreshed, this is called being in “pandemic range.”
- When an Essential or Utility Cooldown element in the Cooldown Manager enters pandemic range, a red box appears around it.
- Players can manually add a Sound or Visual notification when an Essential or Utility Cooldown element in the Cooldown Manager enters pandemic range. This setting can be accessed via Advanced Cooldown Settings > right clicking a spell and creating a New Alert > selecting “Pandemic” under the When category.
- Note that only spells that utilize pandemic will have this option.
STAT AND ITEM SQUISH
We’re simplifying the numbers you see in the game to make things easier to understand. Don’t worry, this won’t change how strong your character is compared to enemies – it just means the numbers will be more intuitive and easier to follow.
PLAYER VERSUS PLAYER TRAINING GROUNDS
If you’re new to player-versus-player (PvP) combat, the Training Grounds are a great place to start. You’ll practice fighting against AI-controlled opponents in battlegrounds like Arathi Basin, Silvershard Mines, and Battle for Gilneas. This will help you learn how these battlegrounds work, understand different classes, and build your confidence for more challenging PvP experiences. While you’ll likely win more often than lose, these opponents aren’t easy – you’ll still need skill and teamwork to succeed!
PRE-EXPANSION EVENT AND WINDS OF MYSTERIOUS FORTUNE BUFF
Starting January 27th, a new in-game event called Twilight Ascension begins, which is a great opportunity to test out recent class updates. Plus, the Winds of Mysterious Fortune buff will be active, giving players extra experience while leveling characters from levels 10 to 79. This is a perfect time to level up alternate characters, complete any content you missed, and get ready for the upcoming Midnight expansion.

- Enemy health and damage has been reduced throughout Season 3 M+ dungeons, relative to player power.
- Developers’ notes: The adjustment to character level and item level means many of the health values and damage values have been reduced throughout the game. We’ve made additional adjustments to Season 3 M+ and raid content to reduce their difficulty, independent of those adjustments. The end result should be that this content feels easier than it did in The Warning update.
- Encounter timeline functionality added to all boss encounters in The War Within Season 3 dungeons.
- Enemy health and damage has been reduced throughout Season 3 M+ dungeons, relative to player power.
- Ara-Kara, City of Echoes

- Developers’ notes: The adjustment to character level and item level means many of the health values and damage values have been reduced throughout the game. We’ve made additional adjustments to Season 3 M+ and raid content to reduce their difficulty, independent of those adjustments. The end result should be that this content feels easier than it did in The Warning.
- Encounter timeline functionality added to all boss encounters in Manaforge Omega.

- Soulcrush healing absorb reduced by 10%.

HOUSING
- Added a Catalog tab to the House Chest which lets you place and preview unowned decor inside your house.

- Added an error when attempting to enter a house that is set to private.
- Fixed an issue where sometimes the rotation control orbs would take a leisurely stroll and abandon their post.
ITEMS
- Fully collecting a class set’s appearances now unlocks all lower difficulty variants. For example, collecting all Mythic appearances will automatically unlock the Heroic, Normal, and Raid Finder variants while unlocking Heroic would only unlock Normal and Raid Finder, etc. Eligible sets will be marked as such in the set collection UI. This change is retroactive to all legacy content.
- Developers’ notes: While we feel the Catalyst has been largely successful in expanding access to powerful seasonal set bonuses, it has also generated friction in its dual use as the primary source of class set appearances for many players. This friction has been further exacerbated by loot roll restrictions in situations such as participating in LFR raiding.
PLAYER VERSUS PLAYER
- Elite Rank is now attained at 2300 personal rating (was 2400). Additionally, this also means that correlated ranks and titles such as Legend, Strategist, and Gladiator will have their game win requirements to be at or above 2300.
- Developers’ notes: We’ve seen feedback around the top end PvP rewards being extremely difficult to achieve in the more recent seasons. Our goal with this adjustment is to slightly ease the requirement while still maintaining the prestige that comes with attaining these rewards and titles.
- The PvP trinket set bonus Gladiator’s Distinction now grants 15% less stamina in PvP combat.
- BATTLEGROUND BLITZ
- Eye of the Storm
- Developers’ notes: We’ve reverted the Eye of the Storm map mechanic changes and made some adjustments to Swift Pursuit on the map for better traversing. Our initial goal with these map changes was to have a better gameplay experience with smaller team sizes on our larger maps. We saw that the changes on the map led to stalemate gameplay which we want to avoid.
- The map mechanics in Eye of the Storm for Battleground Blitz have been reverted to align with how the map typically functions. This means that all four bases will be active at all times, rather than its prior functionality in Battleground Blitz where only two bases alternated based on flag captures.
- The following adjustments have been made to Swift Pursuit for better map traversal:
- Swift Pursuit now grants 100% mount speed (aligned with other large maps, Arathi Basin and Deepwind Gorge)
- 30 seconds after the match starts, Swift Pursuit is increased by an additional 50% while on the map’s bridges (150% mount speed total).
