World of Warcraft Reveals Updated Midnight Transmog Unlock Costs

Based on the beta version of World of Warcraft: Midnight, collecting all 50 Outfits in the new transmog system will cost a little over 2 million gold. While this seems expensive, the cost increases gradually, making it quite reasonable for players who only want a few Outfits on one World of Warcraft character.

World of Warcraft: Midnight is bringing significant updates to the game. Players can look forward to new areas to explore, challenging dungeons, the playable Haranir race, a new option for Demon Hunter gameplay, and an increased level cap. But one of the biggest changes is happening to the transmog system – a core part of how players customize their characters’ appearance.

World of Warcraft: Midnight Transmog Changes Explained

Currently, players change the appearance of gear piece by piece. The new system lets characters save complete looks for each equipment slot, so any gear worn in that slot automatically changes to match. This allows players to create and quickly switch between saved outfits—called ‘Outfits’—without visiting a transmog vendor. Players can save up to 50 Outfits, with the first two being free. Additional Outfits are purchased with gold, starting at 100 gold each and increasing in cost up to 100,000 gold per slot. Beta versions of WoW: Midnight show that unlocking all 50 Outfits will require a total of 2,012,650 gold.

Although the current cost might seem high, it’s actually much more affordable than originally planned. When the outfit system was first tested in the World of Warcraft: Midnight beta, players needed to buy 20 individual slots for each character, costing a total of 800,000 gold, and prices went up quickly. Now, players can get the same number of outfits across all their characters for just 162,650 gold, making the system significantly cheaper than it used to be.

Besides the initial cost of unlocking the Outfit system, the biggest way players will spend gold is creating and saving different outfits. Saving an appearance as an Outfit costs a little over 3,000 gold, no matter your level – a significant reduction from earlier test versions of WoW: Midnight, where the cost increased with level and could reach around 1,000 gold each time you wanted to change your look. Once you’ve created and saved Outfits, switching between them is free, and you can adjust individual pieces of gear within an Outfit for a small gold fee.

The Void Elf racial ability, Ethereal Connection, makes it 50% cheaper to save your current look as an Outfit. However, it doesn’t reduce the cost of unlocking new Outfits.

Just so you know, Outfits and Custom Sets are different things. Custom Sets are what we’re currently calling the way you save how your character looks. You can still create as many Custom Sets as you want for free, but you’ll need to put them on an Outfit to easily switch between them. Don’t worry, any appearances you’ve already saved will automatically become Custom Sets.

Players can also customize their appearances with the new Transmog Situations feature. You can change outfits manually with a button or command, or set them to automatically switch based on what you’re doing – like when you mount up, jump in water, change specializations, or enter new areas like the Housing system in WoW. Applying these automatic switches to an outfit you’ve already unlocked is completely free.

You can start experiencing the new appearance customization options before the Midnight expansion launches on March 2nd. These changes are coming as part of a free update on January 20th, ahead of the expansion. While the final costs might be slightly different, these are likely the prices you’ll see when the update releases.
