World of Warcraft Teases Return to the Least Popular Expansion in History

The recent cinematic following the March on Quel’Danas raid in World of Warcraft suggests the game may revisit the Shadowlands. Several clues within the cutscene hint at a return to this expansion, which wasn’t as well-received by players as others.

Spoilers for World of Warcraft: Midnight below.

On March 31st, World of Warcraft launched March on Quel’Danas, the last raid in the Midnight expansion. Following a major loss at the Voidspire, Azeroth’s heroes join forces with the elves to reclaim Quel’Danas, defeat the corrupted Naaru named L’ura, and prevent Xal’atath from using the Darkwell to endanger Azeroth.

Is World of Warcraft Planning Another Shadowlands Expansion?

The final cinematic for this World of Warcraft raid hints at a new storyline, separate from the events involving Xal’atath. After Xal’atath defeats L’ura, she confronts a vulnerable Arator and Vereesa Windrunner. Just as she’s about to finish them off, an arrow fires from a shadowy portal, nearly hitting her. Sylvanas Windrunner emerges from the portal, causing Xal’atath to retreat. This allows Sylvanas a chance to speak with Arator and Vereesa.

Vereesa tries to convince Sylvanas to stay, but Sylvanas, the former leader of Silvermoon and queen of the Forsaken in World of Warcraft, refuses, stating she’s just getting started. She explains that the Shadowlands aren’t as they appear and she won’t be satisfied until she discovers the truth, though she hopes to see Vereesa again “before the end begins.” While her words are mysterious, Sylvanas’ warning heavily implies that World of Warcraft has significant plans for the Shadowlands storyline.

Fans have noticed hints from Sylvanas about a potential follow-up to the Shadowlands expansion before. She briefly appeared in a recent update to World of Warcraft: The War Within, right before the Midnight content, and voiced similar worries that things were “too orderly,” suggesting a hidden truth. However, bringing up this idea again in a major raid cinematic emphasizes the Shadowlands mystery, making it seem much more important and relevant than players previously thought.

While some players might point to Warlords of Draenor or Battle for Azeroth as low points, World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is generally seen as the worst expansion the game has ever had. Fans disliked it because the story was overly complicated, took place in areas far removed from the familiar world of Azeroth, featured a lackluster villain, and had unrewarding gameplay at the end of the game.

While World of Warcraft: Shadowlands had some good qualities, it wasn’t very well-received overall. Interestingly, World of Warcraft might be revisiting themes from that expansion. Though it’s a potentially risky idea, Blizzard could succeed if they address the things players disliked most about Shadowlands.

When Could ‘World of Warcraft: Shadowlands 2’ Happen?

It’s unclear exactly when World of Warcraft might return to the Shadowlands. Sylvanas’ comments suggest the Titans could be involved, potentially as early as the expansion following the current one (Midnight), or even during The Last Titan expansion. However, because the hints appeared in a raid cinematic, a return could happen sooner than expected. While Patch 12.1 is rumored to take place on the island of Atal’Utek, the Shadowlands could still be revisited before Midnight ends.

As a long-time fan, I think it’s safe to say we’re all wondering what Blizzard has up their sleeve! It’s pretty clear World of Warcraft isn’t finished with the story of the Shadowlands or Sylvanas. We’re just going to have to wait and see when and where Sylvanas shows up next, and if she brings any more of those Shadowlands secrets with her. It’s exciting, but also a little nerve-wracking after everything that’s happened!
