October 7th will be a big day for World of Warcraft! The 11.2.5 update is launching, bringing with it Legion Remix – a special, time-limited event that lets players quickly experience the popular Legion expansion with faster leveling and unique challenges, plus a chance to earn new and returning rewards. Beyond the event, the update also includes some permanent improvements, like five extra character slots, a better Cooldown Manager, and Turbo-Boost for Season 3.
This update is noticeably missing a new story chapter. Although *World of Warcraft: Legion Remix* will include a small Infinite Dragon story, the main storyline won’t receive any lasting changes to address the emotional events of Patch 11.2. This is disappointing, and it’s part of a concerning pattern that started with the release of *The War Within*.
The Case of World of Warcraft’s Shrinking Story Campaign

WoW: The War Within’s X.X.5 Patches Had No New Story Updates
Since the release of *Dragonflight*, *World of Warcraft* has been receiving updates very quickly. Typically, a new patch arrives about eight weeks after the previous one, excluding holidays and major expansion launches. This faster pace means players get more content more often, and expansions are now lasting less than two years. Following this trend, *The War Within* launched on August 26, 2024-just three months before the two-year mark of the previous expansion.

Patch 11.0.5 arrived eight weeks after the main launch of the expansion, coinciding with the very popular 20th anniversary celebration for *World of Warcraft*. While the patch included some fun features, most were only available for a limited time, and new story content wasn’t added until Patch 11.0.7.

On April 22, 2025, Blizzard launched Patch 11.1.5, called Nightfall, for *World of Warcraft*. While it added a few well-received features like the Cooldown Manager, the update was mostly known for short-term events. These included the disliked Dastardly Duos game mode and Winds of Mysterious Fortune. The only lasting addition, the Nightfall scenario, was plagued with bugs and quickly became repetitive. The Horrific Visions Revisited feature wasn’t available until more than a month after the patch launched, and, like the previous version, it lacked any story-driven chapters.
Unlike Dragonflight’s 10.0.5 update, which didn’t include any story chapters, both updates 10.1.5 and 10.2.5 did. 10.1.5 featured the ‘Dawn of the Infinite’ story, and 10.2.5 included ‘Gilneas Reclamation’ and ‘The Dragon Isles Epilogue’.
Patch 11.2.5 is now live, and World of Warcraft players are very excited! They’ve been hoping for a ‘Legion Remix’ similar to the popular ‘Mists of Pandaria Remix’. This update also includes features players have requested, like more character slots and an improved Cooldown Manager. While it’s a significant upgrade from the previous patch, 11.2.5 doesn’t add any new story content. This is the third patch in a row without new story chapters, which is starting to feel like a trend.
The New Norm of Storytelling in World of Warcraft

If things continue as expected with World of Warcraft, *The War Within* will be told through six main parts: the initial expansion, updates 11.1 and 11.2, and smaller story chapters released with each season’s final update (X.X.7). So far, each major content release has been connected by a single, short questline, and it looks like *World of Warcraft: Midnight* will follow the same pattern. If this trend holds, we can expect the same approach throughout the rest of the Worldsoul Saga and in future expansions.
The story quests added in *The War Within* were generally shorter than those in *Dragonflight*.
While Blizzard might unexpectedly add story quests in future patches like 12.0.5, 12.1.5, or 12.2.5, it’s becoming less probable. Although Blizzard is releasing content very quickly, it seems they had to make some compromises, and unfortunately, the game’s story appears to be one of the areas that suffered as a result.
