As a long-time player of World of Warcraft and someone who has struggled with arachnophobia for as long as I can remember, the recent announcement of Arachnophobia Mode in the upcoming expansion has filled me with immense relief and excitement. For years, I’ve avoided certain areas of the game or had to endure anxiety-inducing encounters with spiders, but now, those fears are a thing of the past.
The upcoming release of World of Warcraft: The War Within, which is right around the corner, promises fresh and thrilling new zones. Each zone introduces a unique collection of new and recurring creatures. Among them, the clandestine kingdom of Azj-Kahet, with its distinctive raid, stands out. This hidden realm is inhabited by nerubians, an intriguing race resembling spiders, who have long haunted the nightmares of arachnophobic players.
As someone who isn’t a fan of spiders and their eight-legged companions, I can relate when I say that encountering them in real life can be quite unsettling, even terrifying for some people. Arachnophobia, the intense fear of spiders, is no joke. It can lead to significant psychological distress and long-term trauma. But thankfully, for those of us who prefer to keep our encounters with these creatures virtual, World of Warcraft offers a solution.
How WoW’s Arachnophobia Setting Works
Approximately 5% of the population is believed to have arachnophobia, making it quite a significant fear. Consequently, subjecting every player in World of Warcraft to a raid swarming with spiders might lead to issues. Nerub’ar Palace and its environs are known for their arachnoid bosses and an abundance of spider NPCs. However, The War Within introduces an Arachnophobia Mode that can transform this situation in a heartbeat. This feature functions much like other game toys, but instead of inducing amusement by converting everyone into corgis or gnolls, it serves a valuable purpose.
With the latest update, players now have the option to switch a setting that transforms most spiders and nerubians into crabs or crustaceans. This modification doesn’t affect their crawling movements, as they will still move in their usual manner but with ten legs instead of eight. This change applies not only to NPCs but also to other players’ arachnid mounts and pets. It is expected that this feature will be extended to other areas soon. Even in older zones like Azjol-Nerub and Naxxramas, where spiders add to the creepy atmosphere, this transformation has been implemented.
Why Crabs Have Come to the Rescue
As a gamer with a fear of spiders, also known as arachnophobia, you might find it surprising that replacing spiders with crabs in games seems illogical. However, there could be a logical explanation behind this apparent madness. While kabouraphobia, or the fear of crabs, is less common than arachnophobia, studies have shown that exposure to crabs can help desensitize people with arachnophobia and give them control over their fears. So, instead of causing harm, World of Warcraft could actually be beneficial for individuals dealing with arachnophobia.
Crabs may not instill fear in us like spiders do, but there could be several explanations. For instance, crabs possess only two eyes and move more leisurely compared to the agile spiders. Additionally, they are scavengers rather than hunters, and unlike spiders, they don’t lurk under our beds. The primary reason for this difference in fear response might be that crabs primarily inhabit bodies of water. For those with arachnophobia who play World of Warcraft, the encounter with these aquatic creatures will involve managing their clicky claws instead of confronting spider fangs.
