As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience exploring the vast landscapes of Azeroth, I can confidently say that World of Warcraft never ceases to amaze me with its intricate lore and captivating storylines. The introduction of Hallowfall and the enigmatic crystal, Beledar, is no exception.
Upon its launch, World of Warcraft: The War Within unveiled four fresh territories, one of them being Hallowfall – a breathtaking coastal ecosystem nestled deep within an immense subterranean cavern. Despite the lack of natural sunlight, this region pulses with life under the radiant gaze of its artificial sun, Beledar.
Any player of World of Warcraft who ventures into Hallowfall will be struck by the breathtaking sight of a giant crystal protruding from the cave’s ceiling, casting light and warmth throughout the area. This colossal pillar has stood tall for as long as anyone living below can recall, and carries great importance to the Arathi humans who now inhabit the place.
Beledar Is Not the Other End of Sargeras’ Sword
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but marvel at this crystal that seemingly orchestrated the descent of an entire Arathi fleet from their surface realm into the caverns below, leaving them bewildered in a foreign land. The Arathi now view Beledar as their cultural epicenter and a deity bestowing hope and sagacity upon them. Upon initial observation, it appears to be the remnant of Sargeras’ sword, piercing through the planetary crust; however, delving deeper into its mysteries reveals otherwise.
Why Beledar Now Has Two Personalities
Contrary to its peaceful appearance, the constant calmness emanating from Beledar would abruptly transform into something horrifying. Unaware of the events beneath Azeroth’s crust, the Burning Legion had been vanquished, and their ruler, Sargeras, thrust his enormous sword deep into the planet as a last-ditch effort to destroy it. On that fateful day, Beledar underwent a terrible transformation.
The mighty gem in the sky began to thrum with a new energy, waves of purple void swallowing its radiance. Hallowfall was plunged into darkness, and the Arathi were left defenseless against the horrors that crawled below, including kobyss and nerubians. Countless enemies, no longer repelled by the Light, swarmed their settlements, and the Arathi were nearly wiped out.
WoW’s Beledar Always Returns To Light
After just a short while, Beledar moved again. It reclaimed its divine glow, brightening the entire cave once more. Since then, the people of Arathi in World of Warcraft have had to depend increasingly on themselves and their faith in the Light, aware that at any moment, Beledar might plunge into darkness. These shifts can last from mere minutes to several days, but they are unavoidable.
Nobody Knows Where Beledar Came From
Although the source of Beledar’s existence remains a mystery, its impact on the people and landscape beneath it is profound. It emanates the strength of the Light, which has led many to speculate that it might originate from the Draenei, given its name and radiating power. The Draenei are renowned for their knowledge about the conflict between Light and Void, so it’s plausible that Beledar could be a forgotten relic of their ancient civilization.
It’s been suggested that Beledar might share a connection with the Naaru somehow. These are intelligent beings composed of light crystals in geometric shapes, who have formed friendships with the Draenei. Like Beledar, they undergo changes in their life cycle, moving between Light and Darkness. Although Beledar’s size and shape differ from traditional descriptions of the Naaru, there is still a striking similarity.
WoW’s Zone of Hallowfall Is In Constant Shift
As swiftly as the residents do, I too have acclimated myself to Hallowfall’s recurring transition between light and darkness. Some non-player characters (NPCs) are only visible in either phase, and even the hidden treasures and combat pets transform to match Beledar’s sway. It’s fascinating how one unique creature, known as Beledar’s Spawn, materializes the instant the crystal enters its Void state, offering a replica mount as a reward!
Though Beledar continues to be shrouded in enigma, figures such as Anduin Wrynn have hinted at its deep connection with Azeroth and the Titan slumbering beneath, despite it not being composed of Azerite. Being attuned to Azeroth’s voice, or the Radiant Song, Anduin has also suggested that Beledar shares a strikingly familiar essence. The fateful moment when Sargeras stabbed his sword into Azeroth forever altered the planet, and Beledar, the enigmatic yet captivating gem emblematic of both hope and sorrow, was no exception.
