World of Warcraft’s Transmog System is About to Get More Expensive

The upcoming World of Warcraft: Midnight update is changing how character outfits work. Right now, unlocking all the customization options costs players close to a million gold each. While the system is still being finalized and includes some exciting improvements, it might become too expensive for many players to fully personalize their characters.

The upcoming World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion is significantly improving the transmog system. Instead of changing the look of each piece of armor separately, players will be able to create complete Outfits that automatically adjust their character’s appearance, no matter what gear they’re wearing. A new feature called Situations will allow these Outfits to change automatically based on what the player is doing – whether they’re in dungeons, resting in towns, loading into the game, traveling, switching specializations, or even changing forms as a Dracthyr or Worgen.

World of Warcraft: Midnight Transmog Changes Explained

These changes come with a significant cost: gold. While each character receives two outfits for free, any additional ones must be purchased. The price starts low, but quickly increases, reaching 100,000 gold for the final outfit slot. Collecting all 20 slots requires a total of 800,000 gold. Unfortunately, these outfits can only be used by the character who purchased them, unlike other features in World of Warcraft that are shared across all characters in an account.

Aside from that initial setup, changing your appearance (transmog) doesn’t cost anything. However, saving an outfit currently costs much more in Midnight than it will in The War Within. Right now, saving a complete transmog can cost over 6,000 gold, whereas in the future it will be less than 1,000 gold.

Void Elves have a racial ability called Ethereal Connection that makes saving custom outfit appearances 50% cheaper. However, it doesn’t reduce the initial cost of unlocking new outfits.

While these changes could eventually save players gold, the initial cost is surprisingly high, leaving many fans concerned. Fortunately, the game is still in beta, so adjustments are possible. The new Custom Sets feature will allow players to save their favorite appearances like they do now, but saving those looks permanently will still require spending gold on Outfit slots for transmog.

The updates are planned to launch in World of Warcraft with the Midnight pre-patch, probably around January 20th. Players who want to share their thoughts on this feature should submit feedback through the current beta test.
