Summary
- Some Devil Fruits in One Piece are detrimental for pirates due to a lack of combat potential.
- Devil Fruits like Turtle-Turtle Fruit offer defense but sacrifice offense and mobility.
- Other ineffective Devil Fruits for pirates include the Cook-Cook Fruit, which lacks purpose and creativity.
In the fantasy world of One Piece, Devil Fruits play a significant role in stirring up chaos among the pirate community. Despite their drawbacks, many high-ranking pirates and those with immense bounties have harnessed their powers.
As a One Piece fan, I must admit that not all Devil Fruits are created equal when it comes to being a successful pirate. While some may provide temporary advantages in specific situations, many are simply not worth the trade-off for a pirate striving for greatness. The exchange rate on certain powers is just too poor and could hinder rather than help a pirate’s journey.
1. Guru Guru no Mi
Spin-Spin Fruit

- Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 618
- Current User: Buffalo
The Guru Guru no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit, grants its wielder the power to turn portions of their body into swift-spinning propellers, enabling flight. While this isn’t an entirely useless skill, as it simplifies long-distance travel for most users, it might not be beneficial for pirates due to the unpredictable nature of their profession.
In the thrilling world of piracy, combat prowess is crucial – and unfortunately, this particular skill doesn’t pack much punch in that department. If I were to cross swords with someone strong enough to halt my propellers, this ability would be as effective as a rusty cutlass! Thankfully, even a non-Devil Fruit user like Kyros managed to counter it in the series, suggesting it might not require an extraordinary amount of power to thwart.
2. Kame Kame no Mi
Turtle-Turtle Fruit

- Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 572
- Current User: Pekoms
The Kame Kame no Mi is a type of Devil Fruit known as Zoan, which grants the ability to transform into a turtle or a hybrid form. A turtle’s shell, when transformed, becomes invulnerable, offering protection against any physical assault. However, this incredible defense comes at the cost of offensive and mobility capabilities, making it less than ideal in certain situations.
With its hard shell comes the characteristic slow speed of a turtle, making it a vulnerable choice for anyone using it. Combine this significant weakness with the fact that pirates frequently find themselves in the sea, and it becomes potentially lethal for the pirate user. Moreover, abduction and imprisonment become easier, particularly at the hands of marines.
3. Gocha Gocha no Mi
Pile-Pile Fruit

- Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 875
- Current User: Charlotte Newshi
Despite the mysteries surrounding the inner workings of this particular fruit, these unknown aspects do not diminish its impotence in the eyes of a pirate. In essence, it is classified as a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit, granting its user the power to fuse multiple individuals with themselves – this encapsulates the basic functionality.
From my perspective as an avid fan, it’s a bit tricky to make this power truly beneficial due to its reliance on allies for activation. The question of consent for merging is unclear, which could potentially lower its appeal if consent is indeed necessary. Moreover, unlike other abilities, this one doesn’t offer any personal benefits such as enhancement, addition, or protection. Instead, it simply amplifies the strength of each individual involved in the fusion process.
4. Hito Hito no Mi
Human-Human Fruit

- Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 83
- Current User: Tony Tony Chopper
The Hito Hito no Mi is a Zoan Devil Fruit that enables transformation into a human or human-like creature. Compared to other versions like the Nika and Daibutsu models, it appears less beneficial in terms of advantages. If ingested by a human, these advantages are completely absent.
This mysterious fruit provides absolutely no benefit to humans, and Oda humorously suggests that eating it might even make us more “human.” Since most pirates are already human, not many would find this fruit advantageous. For human pirates, possessing a Devil Fruit often turns out to be more of a hindrance than an asset.
5. Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Albatross
Bird-Bird Fruit, Model: Albatross

- Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 830
- Current User: Morgans
Compared to other models of the Tori Tori no Mi, this particular version seems rather underwhelming and offers little benefit for both pirates and non-pirates. The Zoan-type Devil Fruit that grants its user the ability to transform into an albatross or albatross hybrid is not particularly advantageous.
Given that albatrosses are known for their ability to fly, one might assume that a Devil Fruit modeled after this bird would certainly grant the power of flight. Regrettably, this particular fruit fails to meet even this basic expectation. A pirate equipped with such a Devil Fruit, which transforms them into a ground-bound bird, is unlikely to achieve much success on the high seas.
6. Jake Jake no Mi Omo
Jacket-Jacket Fruit

- Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 645
- Current User: Kelly Funk
The Jake Jake Fruit is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that grants its bearer the ability to transform into a versatile, full-body coat that others can wear. When someone dons this coat, the user gains control over the wearer’s strength and skills. This makes it an ideal Devil Fruit for characters who excel in technique rather than brute force.
Nevertheless, the reliance of the fruit on a wearer renders it unsuitable for pirates. Without someone wearing it, the transformed individual would be at risk, as they seem unable to move. A weak wearer would also undermine its purpose, as there would be no advantage in merging if there’s nothing to gain from it.
7. Kuku Kuku no Mi
Cook-Cook Fruit

- Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 832
- Current User: Streusen
The Kuku Kuku no Mi is a type of Devil Fruit known as Paramecia, which gives its user the unique power to transform objects into edible items. While these foodstuffs can supply necessary nourishment, they are devoid of flavor. For a typical character, this fruit would be ideal, as it eliminates any problems related to sustenance, much like a chef’s perfect touch in cooking.
From my perspective, I find that pirates seem less inclined towards such an item. Indeed, its ability to convert harmful objects into edible fare is undeniably useful for minimizing damage. However, it appears that pirates, with their adventurous spirit and unpredictable lifestyle, might not find much more use for it, even when creativity is factored in. The Grand Line, therefore, could be an entirely alien terrain to a pirate endowed with this ability.
8. Bata Bata No Mi
Butter-Butter Fruit

- Anime Debut (Usage): Episode 8
- Current User: Charlotte Galette
The Bata Bata no Mi is a type of Devil Fruit belonging to the Paramecia class, granting its user the ability to transform into a human composed of butter and manipulate this buttery substance. The butter produced by this fruit has a semi-liquid consistency, is sticky and gooey, and can be utilized to immobilize opponents.
At its core, while it might seem beneficial, it’s essentially just butter in the grand scheme. Sure, it can create tricky situations for opponents to maneuver around or even cause them to slip, but beyond that, there isn’t much else to work with. Regardless of one’s skills and creativity, transforming butter into a weapon would be quite challenging, especially for a pirate who needs tools more versatile for combat.
