WoW Classic: Best PvP Classes & Specs

As a hardcore World of Warcraft Classic player with over a decade of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel like a kid at Christmas as we approach the launch of the long-awaited classic servers. After countless hours spent grinding, raiding, and PvPing in Azeroth, I’ve seen it all – from the glory days of Vanilla WoW to the current expansion, and everything in between.

Following years of enthusiastic requests from fans, Blizzard is nearly ready to unveil the long-awaited World of Warcraft Classic servers. Already, WoW players can reserve their character names and choose their servers. In less than a week, they’ll be embarking on the arduous journey to level 60. As gamers weigh their options on which class to play when the game launches, one crucial factor is whether they prefer engaging in PvE or PvP activities more.

For those engaged in Player versus Environment (PvE), their goal is to progress swiftly towards the endgame, aiming to excel at the toughest dungeons and raids alongside friends and guildmates. Meanwhile, others find satisfaction in dominating opposing factions in Battlegrounds or contested zones on PvP servers. This information caters to those eager to specialize in Player versus Player (PvP), helping them choose suitable classes for their preferred gameplay style.

1. Best WoW Classic PvP Classes, Ranked

Marksmanship Hunter

1) Open-world PvP benefits significantly from having a Hunter, as their pets provide valuable distractions and control mechanisms. While your pet keeps enemies busy, you can unleash ranged attacks on them, temporarily delaying their spellcasts. This tactic might cause the enemy to prioritize your pet over your character. However, in Battlegrounds, Hunters aren’t typically in high demand. But when facing an entire team of mana-reliant enemies, a well-timed Viper Sting can prove devastatingly effective.

Generally speaking, Hunters excel in player versus player (PvP) environments like realms and open-world scenarios. However, they may not be as effective in Battlegrounds. Yet, just like any other class, if you can master the Hunter, you’ll likely outperform many players who find it challenging to fully optimize their class in PvP situations.

Shadow or Discipline/Holy Priest

It may feel a little cheap to list all three Priest specs, but they are pretty relevant when it comes to PvP. Shadow Priests offer an insane potential for DPS when being controlled by a skilled player and the Disc/Holy build is the strongest (and maybe only really viable) options for PvP healing.

In PvP skirmishes, especially against powerful Mages, Dispel Magic becomes an essential skill. Therefore, Priests are kept quite busy with their tasks during each interaction.

Elemental Shaman

Shamans, being Horde-exclusive classes, perform well (though not exceptionally) in Battlegrounds due to their capacity for high burst damage and a variety of Totem and buff spells at their disposal. Chain Lightning becomes incredibly potent in these scenarios when opponents cluster together, and totems such as Earthbind Totem and Tremor Totem can be pivotal for inflicting debuffs and shielding your team from them.

Shamans might not deal as much damage as some other classes, but they excel due to their diverse skill set and capability for sudden high damage output. Having one on your team can be quite beneficial.

Holy Paladin

An Alliance-Only Class, Paladins can be good in PvP in the Retribution spec, but tend to be relegated to the Healer role for the ridiculous strength of the Holy healing spec. Blessing of Freedom, instant-cast massive Healing spells, Blessing of Protection, Divine Shield, and other Paladin abilities make them arguably the best support class in PvP.

While individual paladin buffs and abilities are potent, a team primarily requires only one paladin to reap the advantages this class offers. This aspect often poses challenges for paladins in forming groups, despite the Holy specialization being one of the top PvP healing options.

Destruction Warlock

In PvP Battlegrounds, Warlocks might not frequently grab the spotlight, but they’re indispensable due to their ability to instill fear and deal substantial damage. This combo makes them an integral part of a successful flag carrier takedown in any well-strategized plan.

When a lock approaches, get ready to use your abilities quickly since they have high damage output (DPS).

Arms Warriors

In tight combat situations within PvP matches, a robust Warrior character can bring about catastrophic consequences for the opposing team, even if they don’t cause the greatest long-term harm. It’s no surprise that many Charge+Hamstring macro combinations were popular in the early days of World of Warcraft.

Warriors possess an impressive knack for dominating small battles, and when teamed up with a powerful healer, they become virtually indomitable, making them extremely challenging to defeat.

Subtlety Rogue

In capture the flag games, having a skillfully trained Subtlety Rogue on your team seems to provide a significant edge. In fact, many teams consider it essential to participate in Warsong Gulch without one.

There is some wiggle room to spec differently, but based on our experience we would recommend sticking with Subtlety.

Feral Druid

The Wild Druid stands out significantly in Player versus Player (PvP) scenarios. In essence, it excels as a flag carrier in Warsong Gulch, while also proving efficient for traveling between areas within Arathi Basin. In open-world PvP, the Druids are quite adept at maintaining their survival, and their ability to stealthily transform into Cat Form gives them an edge when surprising opponents.

If a Feral Druid fails to secure the initial hit when stealthy or isn’t carrying the flag in Warsong Gulch, they may find themselves at a disadvantage. Feral Druids primarily rely on their speed and stealth to excel in PvP, rather than dealing high damage. However, if you can catch your opponent off guard or manage to escape your pursuers and snatch the flag, it becomes challenging for opponents to counteract.

Arcane or Frost Mage

In a direct comparison when asked to choose one spec and class that dominates Player versus Player (PvP) in World of Warcraft Classic, it’s hard to look past the Mage. The reason being is that Mages possess an exceptional trait – they have two highly effective builds for PvP. Both the Arcane build and the balanced Fire/Ice build are potent choices for Battlegrounds, making them a formidable force in PvP combat.

Managing crowds effectively using Polymorph and Frost Nova, escaping enemy stuns by utilizing Blink, Counterspell, and dishing out exceptional damage are key factors that elevate a Mage to the top in PvP standings, essentially making them the ruler of the hill.
