Summary
- Nacon has stepped in to take over the license for the WRC game franchise.
- Electronic Arts recently parted ways with the racing game series.
- A new WRC title will reportedly be released in 2027.
In recent weeks, the WRC (World Rally Championship) video game franchise has moved to a new owner following Electronic Arts’ decision to withdraw from the popular racing series. Stepping up to take over the license is French publisher Nacon, who will now hold the rights to create and distribute official WRC games in the future.
The WRC game series, modeled after the FIA World Rally Championship, first appeared in 2001 and has been updated by different developers over time. More recently, EA Sports’ WRC was introduced in 2023, a production of Codemasters, which is an affiliate of Electronic Arts. Despite offering five seasons of post-launch content and two paid DLCs, EA announced they were ending development for WRC, thus ending their association with the franchise.
After EA’s surprising decision to part ways with the iconic WRC franchise, I’m thrilled to share that Nacon, a publisher well-versed in motorsport titles, has stepped up to take over! From 2013 to 2022, they were our trusted partner for WRC games, and now they’ve signed a new agreement with WRC Promoter to publish official titles from 2027 through 2032.
With hit games like Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown and MXGP 24 The Official Game under their belt, Nacon is no stranger to the racing genre. As the developer and publisher of future WRC games, they’ll be responsible for continuing the franchise’s legacy, and even owning all rights for esports competitions!
This exciting news has left us, the fans, eagerly anticipating more exhilarating rally competitions in the years to come. Here’s to a bright future for WRC racing games under Nacon’s guidance!
New WRC Game Scheduled For 2027
As a dedicated WRC gamer, I’m thrilled to share that we’re witnessing a massive change in the WRC games landscape! Nacon is planning a full-blown reboot of this beloved franchise, which means a fresh start for us all. The first game under this new deal is set to hit the shelves in 2027, and work on it is expected to kick off soon. With a complete overhaul coming our way, Nacon promises an innovative approach to rally racing that will captivate both veteran fans and newcomers alike. Alas, specifics are yet to be revealed, so we’ll have to stay patient and see what the future holds for WRC in the years to come.
CrossWorlds, set for release in 2025. For those desiring a more authentic experience, established franchises like WRC, Forza Horizon, or Need for Speed offer realistic racing games to satisfy their cravings.
