Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Implodes Following Bizarre 1.5 ‘Censorship’ Update

Just a few weeks have passed since the release of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, expanding the already extensive collection of Soulslike games in this specific genre. However, instead of finding success, Wuchang has been beset with problems at launch, including stability issues, which have angered gamers and led to a tidal wave of negative reviews numbering in the thousands.

In the recent update of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers (version 1.5), developers Leenzee have made changes that have left fans angry due to perceived censorship of certain game elements, an unexpected plot twist or “retcon,” and adjustments that make previously difficult game sequences easier, which some players feel alters the original game’s intended challenge.

What Happened With Wuchang’s 1.5 Update?

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers isn’t a bad game overall, but it doesn’t offer many unique features compared to the numerous Soulslike games currently dominating the market. This is one reason it received some criticism at its launch. However, the performance issues related to Unreal Engine 5, especially on PC platforms, didn’t make things easier for the game.

Lately, the 1.5 update from Leenzee on Wuchang has stirred up confusion and let down fans globally.

After the 1.5 update, keen-eyed Wuchang gamers took a closer look and figured out what changes had been made. Following this update, some bosses can no longer be killed but instead enter a state of ‘exhaustion’ after being defeated. Certain bosses also have new voice lines that modify the story, and in specific sequences, enemies like Ming Dynasty soldiers will cease attacking you altogether.

This development made a once challenging chapter remarkably easy to navigate, leaving masochistic Soulslike game enthusiasts even more disheartened.

The problem worsened due to moderators in the main Wuchang subreddit allegedly removing posts criticizing the 1.5 update, leading the game’s review ratings to drop back into negative territory.

In a social media post, user Lance McDonald raised questions about the reasons behind these modifications.

Incidentally, you should know that WUCHANG, who is generally supportive of the government, made these adjustments not at the behest of the Chinese Government but rather to appease some extreme nationalist factions in the population. Unfortunately, I’m not fully versed in the specifics myself.

By the way, it’s not the Chinese Government that mandated these alterations; WUCHANG, being supportive of the government, is making them to cater to extremist nationalists. It’s likely that Wuchang: Fallen Feathers will gradually lose popularity from now on, leaving a lasting blemish on Leenzee’s standing. As their debut project, this is not the type of launch that one hopes for when aiming to establish a positive reputation in the industry.
