WWE is saying goodbye to a fan favorite, Mick Foley, who has decided to leave the company because of its association with President Donald Trump. Foley, a long-time WWE performer who has thrilled audiences worldwide, was particularly upset by Trump’s comments following the death of director and writer Rob Reiner, prompting his departure.
Mick Foley is a highly respected figure in professional wrestling. He rose to prominence in 1996, during what was then called the WWF, and became a central performer in the exciting “Attitude Era.” This period was a major turning point for WWE, transforming its wrestlers into mainstream stars and pop culture icons. Along with Foley, names like Steve Austin, The Rock, and Triple H became hugely popular. Though retired from wrestling, Foley has continued to have ties with WWE, but he’s recently expressed discomfort with the company due to its association with Donald Trump.
Mick Foley Says President Trump’s Comments on Rob Reiner’s Death Were “the Final Straw”
This week, famed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were tragically found dead at their home in Los Angeles. While fans and those in the film industry expressed their sadness online, President Trump responded to the news with a controversial post on his social media platform. He claimed Reiner died from what he called “TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.” This comment sparked widespread criticism from people across the political spectrum and ultimately led wrestling legend Mick Foley to retire from WWE. Foley announced his decision on Instagram, explaining that the President’s remarks about Reiner’s death were the breaking point. He stated he could no longer support a company that supports someone who appears to lack empathy and is leading the country towards authoritarianism.
Before becoming president, Donald Trump had a long-standing connection with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), even participating in a match at WrestleMania 23. He continued his relationship with WWE owner Vince McMahon, later appointing McMahon’s wife, Linda, as Secretary of Education. Recently, Mick Foley left the WWE, a significant loss for the company. While there were multiple factors in his decision, Foley stated he’d been worried about the WWE’s ties to President Trump for months, particularly due to the administration’s policies regarding immigrants. The final reason for his departure was comments made regarding the death of Rob Reiner.
Throughout his WWE career, Mick Foley has performed as multiple characters. Fans know him as Mick Foley, but he’s also become popular as Cactus Jack, Mankind, and Dude Love.
Even though Mick Foley has said he’s leaving, his departure won’t be final until June, as his current contract doesn’t expire until then and he doesn’t plan to renew it. This has been a tough week for WWE fans, with both Foley’s announcement and John Cena losing his final match. Many fans will be disappointed to see Foley leave WWE.
