Could a return by Julian Gollop, the creator of the X-COM sci-fi strategy series, potentially reignite interest in the franchise, which has seen a decline in popularity over time?
One thing’s for sure, though, Goop is keen on going back to the franchise he created.
X-Com Creator Is Fine Being Known As The “X-COM Guy”

During an interview with Eurogamer about their latest action-RTS fusion game, Chip ‘n Clawz vs. The Brainiods, the developers were queried about a potential comeback for the franchise.
Goop casually replied, “Absolutely, I’m looking forward to the call from Sid. You might recall him as the head honcho at Firaxis Games.” Goop seems open to rejoining the team, but he’s unsure if he can surpass their achievements with X-COM. He humorously admitted, “We all know that turn-based games and X-COM have made a comeback. I must say, I’m quite pleased with what we accomplished back then. Could I outdo that again? Most likely not.
It’s noteworthy that Snapshot Games, under Goop, developed a game called Phoenix Point, often referred to as the spiritual heir of X-COM. Launched on PC in 2019, and later on PS4 and Xbox One in 2021, this strategy game is known for its turn-based combat system. However, it’s important to mention that Phoenix Point received mixed reviews upon release.
Recently, the most recent X-COM game was named XCOM: Chimera Squad and made its debut solely on PCs in April of 2020. In 2021, a mobile game known as XCOM Legends hit the market, but it appears to have been left untouched since then.
The most recent XCOM title that came out on popular gaming systems (like consoles) is XCOM 2, which was launched in 2016. This game was created by Firaxis and distributed by 2K Games, and it received generally positive reviews. It even earned a “Mighty” rating on Open Critic, with an impressive 88% of critics recommending it.
Apart from the game “War of the Chosen,” launched in 2017, the series has been relatively quiet for some time now. One might speculate that 2K Games could be secretly working on a new project, and if they decide to include Goop, they certainly have the option to do so.
