Microsoft has once more introduced the Xbox Design Lab, a service that’s been absent since December 2024. Now, gamers can craft custom controllers tailored to their preferences or favorite games like “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” and “Fallout”.
The Xbox Design Lab is a service that lets you customize your own controller, which was first introduced during E3 back in 2016. However, it was paused in October 2020 so Microsoft could concentrate on the Xbox Series X|S. It resumed at a later date but had to be stopped again in December 2024 due to modifications in the payment system.
Xbox Design Lab Custom Controllers Now Available
After about a year, Microsoft has followed through on its commitment. The Xbox Design Lab is now open once more, enabling users to design and purchase custom controllers and accessories. Fans can easily create and visualize their own unique peripherals using a user-friendly 3D model that updates instantly as they explore the numerous options for colors, patterns, textures, button styles, and even engravings. This way, players can see exactly what they’re ordering before they make a purchase.

Here are two types of Xbox controllers available now: the standard $80 Xbox Wireless Controller and the premium $170 Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. Customizations like color and button design typically don’t incur extra costs, but certain upgrades such as translucent or themed designs, rubber grips, or personalized engravings do come at an additional fee. For those who prefer a pre-set foundation to build upon, Microsoft offers more than a dozen ready-made controllers to customize further, some even featuring exclusive decals for games like “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” and “Fallout.”

In addition to customizing Xbox controllers through the Design Lab, gamers have the option to enhance their gaming experience by purchasing a variety of accessories. These include customizable carrying cases, charging solutions, paddle add-ons, D-pad variations, thumbstick options, and even thumbstick decorative covers, all aimed at adding a unique touch to their personalized creations.

In about five years since the launch of the Xbox Series X|S, discussions about the upcoming consoles of the next generation have already started. Some reliable whispers suggest that the tenth-generation Xbox console might outperform its PlayStation equivalent, although it’s still premature to make definitive statements. Given that Xbox Design Lab controllers are compatible with both the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X|S, there’s a strong possibility that players may continue using their personalized designs across generations as well.
