As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the addition of Hanger 13’s Mafia: Definitive Edition to Xbox Game Pass is a game-changer for me. Having grown up during the era when developers were trying to emulate the success of Grand Theft Auto, Mafia stood out as a breath of fresh air with its subdued, mature gameplay.
For August 2024, Xbox’s Game Pass is introducing its initial selection of games, with the standout title being a remake of the iconic Mafia series developed by Hanger 13.
First debuting in 2002, the game titled “Mafia” presented an open-world crime experience amidst developers striving to rival the success of Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto series. Unlike its contemporaries, “Mafia provided a more somber, mature gaming experience“.

What Makes Hangar 13’s Mafia Remake Definitive?
Originally created by Illusion Softworks, the Mafia game gave birth to two subsequent installments. After the series concluded, the original developers ceased involvement with the intellectual property. Yet, it persists as a beloved cult favorite among gamers.
13th Studio (Hanger 13) launched the remake of the 2002 classic game, Mafia: Definitive Edition, in the year 2020. This remake stayed true to its roots, allowing players to step into the shoes of Tommy Angelo, a taxi driver struggling during the Great Depression. However, an encounter with the Salieri crime family provides him an opportunity to become part of their operations.
In Hanger 13’s remake of “Mafia: Definitive Edition,” longtime players will recognize that the narrative, while still engaging, hasn’t introduced any fresh content. The storyline remains consistent throughout its approximately 11-hour playthrough.
Hanger 13 chose to replace the game’s dialogue with a fresh set of voices and also captured new motion-capture footage for their cutscenes, using new voice actors. In doing so, Hanger 13 stayed faithful to Illusion Softwork’s original concept for the game.
As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of video games, I can attest to the fact that the open-world elements in certain games can be both captivating and challenging. In the original game we’re discussing, these open-world aspects were a significant part of the experience, including the ever-present patrol cars on the lookout for rule-breakers like speeding or running red lights. Having personally encountered such situations in my virtual journey through this game world, I can say that the tension and excitement they brought made the experience all the more immersive and engaging.
A refusal to obey leads to a high-speed pursuit. As the number and intensity of offenses escalate, so too does the law enforcement’s reaction.
In a similar vein, third-person shootouts and intense battles may pose challenges for gamers due to their sometimes outdated mechanics which can penalize careless players.
In the remake, certain aspects may be disabled, but it’s important to note that the mechanics were designed to create an immersive gaming experience. Disabling them might diminish the immersion, which is crucial for the game’s setting, the fictional city of Lost Heaven, modeled after New York and Chicago in the 1930s.
The reason why the original Mafia game stands out as a timeless classic is its deliberate avoidance of non-essential content and side quests, with a strong emphasis on crafting a compelling narrative within a captivating, visually stunning urban environment instead.
In contrast to numerous contemporary open-world games, Mafia: Definitive Edition primarily emphasizes its narrative rather than providing an abundance of optional activities or the liberty to traverse a largely empty world.
