Beginning on May 21st, Xbox Game Pass is adding Retro Classics – a fresh assortment with more than 50 classic Activision games from the ’80s and ’90s – to their collection. This addition significantly enhances the retro gaming experience as part of the May update for Xbox gamers. Essentially, Xbox Game Pass is a subscription service designed for both PC and Xbox players who crave a steady flow of games, which includes not only the latest releases but also beloved titles from yesteryears.
In January 2023, Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard expanded their collection of timeless games that span multiple generations. Through partnership with Antstream Arcade, a well-known classic game platform, Xbox has already given players access to PlayStation 1 titles. With the addition of recent hits like “Doom: The Dark Ages” and “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33,” their library now boasts an even more appealing selection of classic games as well.
Microsoft has shared on their Xbox blog that members of Xbox Game Pass worldwide now have access to Retro Classics, a library with more than 50 revamped Activision games from the ’80s and ’90s, such as popular titles like Commando, Space Quest 6, Grand Prix, Kaboom!, Mech Warrior 2: 31st Century Combat, and Pitfall!. This collection can be enjoyed on Xbox consoles, the Xbox app for PC, and compatible devices through cloud gaming. Devices that support Xbox include smart TVs from LG and Samsung, Amazon’s Fire TV devices, and Meta Quest headsets.

Beyond its ability to excel across various games and genres, Retro Classics now offers contemporary enhancements for a smoother gaming experience. Some of these updates include save and reload options, which were seldom present in the original versions. Moreover, this app caters to community-driven activities such as challenges, achievements, new challenge modes, and leaderboards. Users can create 24-hour community challenges, earn points and level up by completing tasks, or engage in head-to-head gameplay with fellow gamers. The multiplayer-oriented features make this collection appealing not just for solo players seeking nostalgia, but also for those who desire to compete against other skilled gamers on some of the most iconic video games.
For members of Game Pass, it’s simple to play Retro Classics. They can download the app on their console or use the Xbox app on their PC. The Retro Classics app offers all the essential gameplay features, including challenges and achievements. This new addition aligns with Microsoft’s goal of providing more classic games to gamers. Microsoft has been consistently growing its subscription service offerings, most recently including Ubisoft’s classic games. Now, Xbox Game Pass serves as an excellent all-in-one gaming subscription service.
Xbox has revealed intentions to broaden the Retro Classics library, anticipating more titles from Activision which will increase the collection to over 100 options. Regarding contemporary games, Microsoft introduced titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and others into the Xbox Game Pass in May. Furthermore, Microsoft announced additional streaming choices for GeForce Now, new shortcuts for the Game Bar, and Xbox gift cards available in custom amounts as part of their May update.
