The highest level of Xbox Game Pass now costs $30 a month, but current members may want to wait before canceling. Microsoft surprised many players by increasing the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from $19.99 to $29.99 each month. This price change also included updates to the service, replacing the Core and Standard plans with new Essential and Premium options.
As you’d expect, the increase in the Xbox Game Pass price wasn’t popular. So many people tried to cancel their subscriptions that the cancellation page actually crashed. It’s understandably frustrating that Xbox is raising the price, but disappointed fans might want to wait until mid-November to cancel, just in case. This could be a better option.
It’s not a coincidence that Microsoft decided to raise the price of Xbox Game Pass right now. The service is about to have a really strong period, with lots of exciting new games available on the day they launch. Just October will bring titles like Double Fine’s Keeper, Ninja Gaiden 4, and The Outer Worlds 2, and then Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is coming in November. With so many major games being released in the next month and a half, it might be smarter to hold off and cancel your Game Pass subscription when the service has fewer new releases.

Generally, fewer major new games are added to Game Pass in late November and December. The first few weeks of January are usually even quieter. Actually, even though 2025 has been a fantastic year for Game Pass, things didn’t really pick up until the end of January. If you’re hoping to play games like Ninja Gaiden 4, The Outer Worlds 2, and Black Ops 7 at a significant discount, you might get more value by playing those titles then canceling your Game Pass subscription.
Going forward, if you’re not thrilled with the higher Game Pass price but still want to enjoy new games on release day, you might want to be more careful about when you subscribe to the Ultimate tier. If a game you’d normally buy for around $70 is coming out that month, it could be smarter to sign up for Game Pass Ultimate just to play it, and then cancel your subscription when you’re finished. It’s not the most convenient solution, but you can still get great value from Game Pass even with the price change. Consider this approach to maximize your savings.
