Xbox Increases External Storage Size Support

The Xbox Series consoles are going to accommodate bigger external storage options, and in an upcoming update, Xbox Insiders will be among the first to use this expanded compatibility. This means that external hard drives exceeding 16 terabytes can now work seamlessly with the gaming systems.

The company announced they’re now supporting external USB drives exceeding 16TB, ensuring your favorite games are easily accessible whenever you want to play them. To make use of this extra capacity, newly-formatted larger-than-16TB drives will be partitioned into several sections, allowing for more storage space for games and applications. These partitions will show up as distinct devices in the list of storage devices.

The company’s update supposedly expands compatibility for drives exceeding 16TB, but doesn’t establish a new maximum size. This implies that the partition technique might accommodate external drives of any capacity, depending on your budget. If you own a larger drive already, Microsoft suggests it may require reformatting.

Any drive larger than 16 Terabytes, which has previously been formatted, will remain unchanged due to this update but needs to be reformatted again to utilize the new features supporting bigger drives.”

Or simply:
“Previously formatted drives over 16TB will not benefit from this update until they’re reformatted.

This week, there’ll be more than just one piece of news from Xbox, as the company is set to hold their annual Developer Direct event on January 23rd. Rest assured, TopMob will bring you comprehensive updates on every bit of news revealed during the showcase.
