Xbox Making Change to UI Dashboard

Microsoft is developing a user-friendly enhancement for the dashboard of the Xbox, aimed at making it simpler for cloud gamers to quickly access their recently played games across multiple devices. Over the past few years, Xbox has been deeply committed to its Play Anywhere initiative, enabling Xbox users to effortlessly access their game library on various platforms such as Xbox Series X and S consoles, PCs, cloud, and handheld devices. This expansion also includes Xbox’s increased emphasis on third-party partnerships, resulting in popular first-party titles like Forza Horizon 5 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle being made available on PlayStation as well.

This fall, Microsoft plans to expand its Xbox family with the introduction of the ROG Xbox Ally, a joint project with Windows 11. Revealed during the June Xbox event, this handheld device will come in two variations: the basic ROG Xbox Ally and the more potent ROG Xbox Ally X. Leveraging the power of Xbox Cloud Gaming, the ROG Xbox Ally enables gamers to carry their digital libraries wherever they go, addressing a gap in Xbox’s ecosystem that emerged with Valve’s Steam Deck handheld release some years back. It appears that Microsoft’s initial first-party handheld has been put on hold, as the ROG Xbox Ally gears up for its fall launch.

Microsoft is enhancing its cloud gaming experience by introducing a new feature called “Play History” tab on the home dashboard of Xbox devices. This new addition, appearing as a folder on the home screen, will replace the rightmost game tile. It offers easy access to games stored in the cloud, differentiating from native console games displayed on the left side. The “Play History” tab will display the four most recently played cloud games in a compact grid. Upon clicking, it’s expected to open up to a wider collection of cloud-based gaming options.

Xbox UI Getting New ‘Play History’ Feature

Currently, Xbox gamers are pondering if they can disable the new Play History feature because those who don’t use cloud gaming wouldn’t appreciate an always-present empty gray box on their home screen taking up space. However, it’s clear that this new folder could be very beneficial, as it significantly reduces the need to search through “My Games and Apps” for recently played cloud games. This feature aligns perfectly with the essence of cloud gaming, which focuses on simplicity, efficiency, and a smooth user experience.

At present, the Play History dashboard folder can only be accessed by Xbox Insiders, but it should become available to everyone within a fortnight or so, though an exact launch date is yet to be specified. It’s exciting to learn that the feature will be ready around the same time as the release of ROG Xbox Ally towards the end of this year.
