Microsoft has disclosed that they are trialing a new functionality within their PC application. This feature enables users, on compatible Windows 11 devices, to directly access third-party launchers like Battle.net and GOG Galaxy from the Microsoft app itself. Xbox announced that this feature is now accessible for Xbox Insiders who are part of the PC Gaming Preview program, so they can test it out and offer feedback.
With the Xbox PC app on Windows, users gain access to games they’ve bought within Microsoft’s marketplace, plus an expanding library of PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate games such as “Herdling” and the soon-to-be-released “Gears of War: Reloaded”. This software also accommodates games linked to the Xbox Play Anywhere program and serves as a starting point for titles accessible through Xbox Cloud Gaming, available exclusively to Game Pass Ultimate members. Regular updates to the Xbox app are made over time, and it even offers a PC Gaming Preview program where users can test out upcoming changes before they go public.
Xbox’s PC App Can Soon Install And Launch Third-Party Apps
In approximately two months, Xbox users can expect to see the ROG Xbox Ally handheld lineup on store shelves. Prior to this release, Microsoft is giving Xbox PC app users an opportunity to test out a new feature. This update introduces a “My Apps” section within the Library pane, allowing popular applications to be directly installed and launched from the Xbox PC app. The update has been made available for Xbox Insiders via the PC Gaming Preview program. This new section will be located between “My games” and “Play later” in the Library, with a selection of applications, including Battle.net, Microsoft Edge, and GOG Galaxy, now available to test out.
Microsoft explained that the new tabs for applications in the Xbox PC app have been designed with the purpose of simplifying game access and management on Windows 11 portable devices, such as the ROG Xbox Ally. Initially, only GOG Galaxy and Battle.net were demonstrated by Microsoft, but the ‘My Apps’ page will be expanded over time to accommodate other digital storefronts. It is still undecided whether well-known PC marketplaces like Steam or the Epic Games Store will also be supported.
As a dedicated fan, I’m eagerly waiting for the public release of the Xbox PC app update from Microsoft.
