  • YAIBA offers a lighthearted battle shōnen with a classic good vs. evil storyline, appealing to fans of nostalgic anime.

Among the intriguing anime remakes of 2025, the re-imagining of the anime adaptation of Gōshō Aoyama’s “Brave Samurai Legend YAIBA (Kenyū Densetsu YAIBA)” stands out. The original “YAIBA” manga, with over 17 million copies sold, was a massive hit during its run from 1988 to 1993. However, it seems that the excitement surrounding this series may not have reached many anime fans beyond Japan. At New York Comic Con in October last year, VIZ Media announced they’ve licensed the “YAIBA” manga for an English release for the first time ever, with the first volume due out in July. Meanwhile, the anime is set to premiere on Netflix and Hulu in April.

From the creative genius behind one of history’s longest-running manga series, “Detective Conan” (or “Case Closed” in English-speaking countries), we’re eagerly awaiting his latest work, “YAIBA: Samurai Legend“. After more than 30 years since its initial adaptation, fans are intrigued to see what new, captivating story this masterful author will unfold.

What is YAIBA: Samurai Legend About?

A Sparring Match Goes Supernatural

YAIBA: Samurai Legend revolves around the main character, Yaiba Kurogane, a teenage samurai-in-training who spent his youth honing his skills in the jungle. His life takes an unexpected turn when he returns to Japan and lives with the Mine family, who share ties with his late father, Kenjuro. The lively and boisterous Yaiba puzzles Sayaka, the daughter of the household. One day on their way to school, Yaiba crosses paths with kendo practitioner Takeshi Onimaru, leading to a confrontation that unleashes two ancient spirits: Fujinken, the Wind God’s Sword, and Raijinken, the Thunder God’s Sword. These mythical weapons, locked in eternal conflict, clash once more. The secrets behind these ancient blades will soon be uncovered.

YAIBA Background Information

About the Upcoming Anime Series

Initially, the YAIBA manga appeared weekly in Shogakukan’s Shōnen Sunday magazine, spanning from September 1988 to December 1993, encompassing a total of 24 volumes. In 1993, this series was honored with the 38th Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōnen category. As of May 2024, more than 17 million copies of YAIBA have been distributed. A fresh English release of the first volume is scheduled for July 202X, marking the series’ inaugural official English translation. Originally produced by Studio Pastel (known for Initial D), the YAIBA anime aired for 52 episodes from April 1993 to April 1994.

The forthcoming “YAIBA” anime is crafted by WIT Studio, a studio renowned for their initial project, the first three seasons of “Attack on Titan”; with Bamboo (responsible for background art, creator of “CHAINSAW MAN”) handling the series’ backdrops. The series is steered by Takahiro Hasui, a director and storyboard artist who has worked extensively on episodes of “Mob Psycho 100”, produced by BONES; with Tōko Machida (known for series composition in “Chaika – The Coffin Princess”) responsible for the script. Character designs are by Yoshimichi Kameda, an alien and yōkai designer who also acts as chief director on “YAIBA”; featuring music by Yoshiaki Dewa and Yutaka Yamada. The cast includes:

  • Minami Takayama as Yaiba Kurogane
  • Manaka Iwami as Sayaka Mine
  • Yoshimasa Hosoya (Reiner Braun, Attack on Titan) as Takeshi Onimaru
  • Atsushi Miyauchi as Raizō Mine
  • Gō Inoue as Kojirō Sasaki

The anime adaptation titled “YAIBA: Samurai Legend” is scheduled to debut on April 5, airing before the slot of another Gōshō Aoyama anime series, “Case Closed.” Previously, a theatrical release of “YAIBA” took place in Japan on March 13. On March 8, it was announced that the series will be available for streaming on Hulu and Netflix upon its release.

Expect a Visual Feast

WIT Studio’s Unmistakable Touch Will Be The Series’ Biggest Weapon

Stepping into the thrilling tide of remakes that have swept through the anime world lately, I’m eagerly anticipating the April 5 premiere of YAIBA, not just because it hails from the studio responsible for the visually stunning segments of the Attack on Titan anime adaptation. This studio has continued to impress, with their upcoming sci-fi anime, Moonrise, also gracing our screens this Spring season. The trailers and sneak peeks of YAIBA hint at an engaging and visually captivating series, with dynamic camera angles, effects, and fight choreography that promise a visual feast, beautifully showcasing Aoyama’s distinctive art style reminiscent of Case Closed.

This is an action-packed shonen series that harks back to a bygone era, offering a refreshing change from recent heavy-hitting titles due to its lighter tone. The story presents a classic struggle between good and evil, with our spirited protagonist fighting not only for the world’s survival but also for Onimaru. In essence, it seems that YAIBA: Samurai Legend may deliver an old-school friendship-powered series, much like Dragon Ball: DAIMA, providing a nostalgic anime experience tailored to modern aesthetics – a remedy some might find just what they need.

YAIBA: Samurai Legend is set to premiere on April 5, and will be available on Netflix and Hulu.
