As a long-time fan of Final Fantasy 14, it’s always exciting to hear about new developments and potential expansions for this beloved game. With Naoki Yoshida expressing his team’s goal to bring FF14 to Nintendo consoles, I can’t help but imagine the thrill of adventuring in Eorzea on my trusty Nintendo Switch!
In a recent statement, Naoki Yoshida, lead producer and director of Final Fantasy 14, expressed an ambition to bring the game to Nintendo’s platforms. This aspiration is something the development team is actively pursuing. With over a decade since its initial release in 2013, Final Fantasy 14 has remained popular and prosperous in 2024. Over the past ten years, the game has undergone multiple updates and storyline expansions, with the most recent one, titled Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail, debuting this past July.
Since its initial release, Final Fantasy 14 has been adapted for multiple platforms, including the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. The Xbox Series X/S versions were recently launched in March, after some significant setbacks, offering Xbox players their first taste of the game. There’s speculation among fans that Final Fantasy 14 could be a great fit for the Nintendo Switch or its future console, and it seems some developers are pondering the possibility of porting the highly-praised MMORPG to Nintendo’s hardware.
At this year’s Gamescom, I sat down for an interview with Gamereactor where they asked me about some of the hurdles my team has been tackling lately, like getting Final Fantasy 14 onto Xbox Series consoles and porting Final Fantasy 16 to PC. They also wanted to know if we’re considering any new platforms for Final Fantasy 14 in the future. Honestly, our players seem to be clamoring for a version of the game on Nintendo’s consoles, but right now, our primary focus is expanding to as many consoles as we can. That being said, I can tell you that we’re making good progress on bringing Final Fantasy 14 to Nintendo platforms, so keep an eye out for it!
Final Fantasy 14 Reportedly in Talks for Switch 2
Given that “Final Fantasy 14” is a game that requires high visual and technical specifications, it appears doubtful that it will be playable on the existing Nintendo Switch hardware. However, there are indications that Nintendo is developing a successor console to the Switch, which may be launched after March 2025. If reports and rumors about this new console are accurate, it seems likely that it would have enough power to potentially run “Final Fantasy 14.”
This isn’t the first time Yoshida was asked about bringing Final Fantasy 14 to the Switch 2, as he was open to the possibility of bringing the game to the system. As such, it’s quite possible that Yoshida is alluding to bringing FF14 for Nintendo’s future system, though this is speculation for now. Yoshida also expressed his thanks to all the players who had waited a long time for FF14 to launch on the Xbox Series X/S consoles, grateful for the response they got.
