Players are reporting that Final Fantasy 14 is planned to be released on the Nintendo Switch 2. This information comes from a recent conversation with the game’s director, Yoshi-P, who often informally chats with the Final Fantasy 14 community during the New Year holiday, as he did to ring in 2026.
So, things have been a little rocky in Final Fantasy 14 lately. The Dawntrail expansion got a mixed reaction, and we’ve been dealing with frustrating DDoS attacks and some delays with updates. But honestly, as a player, I’m still optimistic! It feels like the team is working to get things back on track, and I’m excited to see what’s coming next after Dawntrail.
Yoshi-P Swings By To Chat About the Game
So, I was reading reports from the Japanese servers – apparently, Yoshi-P himself logged in as his character and hung out in Costa Del Sol! It was right as the new year started over there, and he took questions from players. He answered a few, giving us some hints about what’s coming up in the game. But the big thing? Someone asked about the Switch version of Final Fantasy 14, and he just said, “Please look forward to the Switch version!” It’s not a full announcement, but it definitely sounds like it’s happening, which is awesome!
For a long time, fans have speculated about a version of Final Fantasy 14 for the next Nintendo Switch (Switch 2). While nothing was officially announced, the game’s producer, Yoshi-P, hinted in 2024 that it might be possible, and later in 2025 suggested positive news was coming for Switch 2 owners. He stated they were working hard to make it happen, but needed more time. Now, a recent message from the developers indicates that a Switch 2 version has finally been confirmed.
Players have varied opinions about the possibility of the MMORPG coming to the Switch 2. Some worry that being limited to the console’s hardware could make it harder to update and improve the game over time, a problem seen with games like Final Fantasy 11 and Final Fantasy 14. However, many are excited about the prospect of playing the game on a portable device. While Final Fantasy 14 Mobile exists, it’s not yet available in western markets. Plus, even though you can play Final Fantasy 14 on a Steam Deck, the Switch 2 is likely to reach a much wider audience due to its popularity.
What Else is Coming to Final Fantasy 14?
Beyond the Switch announcement, Yoshi-P shared a lot of exciting updates. The team is working on things like letting players customize character animations. Viera players will soon be able to use the Cloud hairstyle, and more glamour slots will be added after the housing update. We’ll hear details about the new Beastmaster job in the next Live Letter. They’re also looking at improving the dye system, potentially updating character creation, and maybe even increasing the buff limit. Keep in mind that all of these features are still in development and could change, as this information hasn’t been officially announced through Square Enix or Final Fantasy XIV’s usual channels.
While waiting for updates, players can enjoy the Heavensturn event, which started in Final Fantasy 14 on December 31st. The event features a short questline that lets you earn a new minion and a piece of furniture for your house, apartment, or Free Company. You have plenty of time to participate, as the event lasts until January 15, 2026!
