The latest Mario Tennis game, Mario Tennis Fever, introduces a new feature: players can now alter their opponent’s court during matches. The Mario sports series has been a key part of Nintendo’s lineup since the original Mario Tennis game came out on the Virtual Boy in 1995. Developed by Camelot – the team behind the Mario Golf series – these games have appeared on every major Nintendo console. Now, with Mario Tennis Fever heading to the Switch 2, the gameplay is getting a fresh twist.
During the September 2025 Nintendo Direct, Nintendo announced the latest installment in the Mario Tennis series. Mario Tennis Fever is part of the celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the Mario franchise and will feature a large roster of 38 playable characters. The game will include a new story mode and a core gameplay mechanic called “Fever Rackets,” where players can collect 30 different special rackets. Nintendo and Camelot are now releasing more information about the various types of Fever Rackets in Mario Tennis Fever.
Mario Tennis Fever Reveals New Fever Rackets
The latest trailer for Nintendo’s Mario Tennis Fever highlights the game’s unique Fever Rackets. These special rackets let players change up the court in interesting ways – for example, the Fire Racket creates fiery spots, and the Ice Racket freezes sections of the court. Players can also use rackets to summon obstacles; the Pokey Racket creates a Pokey that will trip opponents. The Shadow Racket is especially clever, allowing players to briefly create a clone of themselves, giving them a 2-on-1 advantage. Mario Tennis Fever is set to launch on February 12th.
Nintendo revealed more about the special moves in Mario Tennis Fever. Players can charge up a “Fever meter” by hitting shots back and forth, then unleash powerful “Fever Shots.” The game also lets you steal the bonus from an opponent’s Fever Shot if you return it skillfully. These shots now include a health component – taking a hit can damage your character and even temporarily knock them out of the game.
Mario Tennis Fever Has Lots in Store for Fans
In addition to revealing details about the core gameplay of Mario Tennis Fever, Nintendo has given us a sneak peek at the game’s characters and modes. The game will include several new faces, such as Goomba, Nabbit, and Baby Waluigi. Nintendo also highlighted some of the game modes, including a new mode called Wonder Court Match, which takes inspiration from Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Mario Tennis Fever will have a robust online experience at launch, with online lobbies, Ranked matches, and support for the Switch 2’s GameShare feature.
With Mario Tennis Fever launching on the Switch 2, Nintendo is hoping to kick off a strong lineup of Mario sports games for the new console. This is the first major Mario sports spinoff planned for the Switch 2, and while there’s no word yet on future games, players can already enjoy classic titles like Super Mario Strikers through Nintendo Switch Online, including a selection of GameCube games exclusive to the Switch 2. Mario Tennis Fever promises to shake up the traditional gameplay with its new Fever Rackets feature, which should make matches more exciting and unpredictable.
