Avowed’s recent anniversary update has significantly expanded character creation options, a key element in fantasy role-playing games. Players can now choose from three new races in addition to the existing humans and elves. The update also introduces the quarterstaff, a more visually impressive weapon choice for mages who prefer something beyond traditional wands and spellbooks.

You may remember that some of the features in this anniversary update were initially planned for Avowed last year, but Obsidian postponed them.

This Avowed update adds three new playable races: dwarves, orlans, and aumaua. Most players will be familiar with dwarves, but orlans are a short, hairy, and pointy-eared people from the Pillars of Eternity world. Aumaua are a larger, powerfully built race, often with skin that looks like fish scales – you can meet one of them, Kai, as a companion in the game.

Choosing a dwarf character gives you a bonus to both your strength and health, while playing as an orlan increases your perception and willpower. Aumaua characters are even stronger, gaining a plus two bonus to their strength. I’m planning to play as either a dwarf or an orlan next time I play Avowed, because the latest weapon update is ideal for a fast, powerful character.

This quarterstaff is a blunt weapon with special moves that mimic a wand, making it perfect for players who want to roleplay a powerful, perhaps arrogant, mage – maybe even a small, fantastical one with furry ears! It’s a fun setup that practically begs for comedic adventures.

The latest update for Avowed introduces a New Game Plus mode, letting you replay the story after finishing it. You can also now take photos of your character as they battle through the Living Lands with powerful spells.
