As you advance in Monster Hunter Wilds, you’ll gain freedom to engage in continuous fights against Lala Barinas and Balaharas without interruption, thanks to dynamic monster spawns. However, top-tier hunters can’t be everywhere at once: You might find yourself required to assist a friend battling an Ajarakan while another rare Uth Duna pops up on your map offering a valuable plate as one of its survey rewards. Fortunately, you won’t have to forgo rare monster loot if you can’t immediately participate in a field survey: In Monster Hunter Wilds, you can save hunts from the World Map to complete at your convenience when you’re ready.
As a gamer, I’d say: “To save a monster on my map for future hunting, I hover over the beastie on the big ol’ world map and then press A on my Xbox controller (or F if I’m using keyboard). This kick-starts a new quest creation. After that, another press of A does the trick, and I opt for ‘Save as Investigation.’ Instead of diving right into a field survey hunt, this action creates a quest that I can pick up later from Alma at the quest counter in the Investigations section.
Converting a field survey into an investigation isn’t gratis; it requires some Guild Points, with more advanced and tougher monsters requiring up to 600 points. However, if you’re frequently hunting, the expense shouldn’t be a concern as I’ve been storing investigations regularly since discovering this feature, and have never found myself short on guild currency.
In the heat of high-rank gameplay, having the ability to save my investigations becomes priceless. That’s because, as monsters on the map start doling out randomized bonuses from their field surveys, I don’t want to miss out on any potential rewards. For instance, if I spot a Rathian with a guaranteed ruby in its reward pool – a gem I desperately need for my weapon upgrade – I can safely tuck it away in my investigations. This way, I can go after other hunts without worrying about losing that precious gemstone.
Not only that, but you also have the option to repeat investigations up to thrice. If you’re trying to collect all pieces for the Xu Wu armor set, you won’t need to wait for them to appear naturally. If you’ve stored an investigation with a decent amount of rewards, you can run it consecutively three times, which will give you a large number of parts.
After defeating the monster, you have the option to convert the field survey into an investigation. To do this, simply interact with Alma as you normally would to start or join a quest. Then navigate to the “Field Survey History” section. Here, you’ll find the last 16 monsters you’ve encountered in the field, and you can select any of these encounters to save as an investigation. This will provide you with three chances to investigate, effectively allowing you to hunt for the rare rewards associated with that monster up to four times. This increased opportunity can lead to a significant haul of Rathian Rubies.
You should be careful not to overdo your savings on investigations, as you can only store a maximum of 50. This limit shouldn’t pose a problem for the majority of users. However, I might struggle due to my tendency to hoard Tempered Rey Dau, which could indicate a need for some self-control on my part.
