Summary
- The Constantine sequel seems to face delays due to Keanu Reeves‘ concerns over script changes.
- Reeves wants a sequel to maintain the original tone and not become a big action movie like Marvel.
- Like John Wick, Reeves’ dedication to his projects may ensure Constantine 2’s success.
It seems that the sequel to Keanu Reeves’ movie “Constantine” is taking more time than initially anticipated because of issues he reportedly has with the script. The sequel was first announced back in 2022, with Reeves reprising his character, John Constantine.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can tell you that the 2005 adaptation is rooted in the iconic DC Comics character who debuted in the “Hellblazer” comic book series. This film focuses on a formidable warlock employing his enchanting skills to combat the sinister forces lurking in the shadows. The movie, however, stirred controversy among fans due to its transformation of the character’s background from British to something else. Yet, despite the initial uproar, this film has managed to cultivate a dedicated fanbase over the years, largely due to Keanu Reeves’ enduring appeal as the lead actor.
Director Francis Lawrence, known for his work on many of the Hunger Games films, is coming back to direct Constantine 2, as the project is currently underway. At the same time, James Gunn and Peter Safran have been given creative control over DC’s movie and TV lineup. Their plans for the DC Universe involve multiple other heroes and projects, with Superman leading the way this summer. It’s expected that Constantine 2 will be part of the Elseworlds films, which are standalone DC comic adaptations separate from the main DC Universe continuity, like Matt Reeves’ Batman movie. However, Keanu Reeves’ busy schedule may cause some issues with the script for Constantine 2.
In an interview with The Direct, Peter Stormare – who played Lucifer in the original Constantine – shared insights about the potential sequel and Keanu Reeves’ feelings towards the script. Stormare expressed that Reeves, whom he knows well, isn’t particularly content with the scripts coming from studios. He further explained that studio interference and an attempt to make the script more extravagant might be causing delays in production.
Delving deeper into the subject, Stormare revealed that God could appear in the sequel, with Reeves aiming for Constantine 2 to maintain a similar scale and tone as the first film. Stormare added that Reeves is very proud of the original Constantine and is determined to preserve the character he loved.
Stormare and Reeves seem to have a good understanding of what makes the story effective, with Stormare suggesting, “Avoid turning it into a big Marvel production… Don’t make us fly around on harnesses constantly or shoot each other up. Keep it simple. Let it be.” You can read Stormare’s comments on Keanu Reeves and Constantine 2 below:
As a big fan, I must admit that my admiration for Keanu Reeves runs deep, but it seems he’s not entirely satisfied with the scripts that typically emerge from the studios. You see, the initial film didn’t exactly set the world on fire at first, yet it went on to become a sleeper hit and eventually one of the most iconic cult movies ever made. However, when it comes to making a sequel, the studios are pushing for over-the-top action sequences, such as cars soaring through the sky and elaborate fight scenes. This might not align with Keanu’s vision for the franchise, given its unique cult status.
Instead of focusing on character development, it should transition more towards an action-packed movie like before, as he seems eager to reprise his role as Constantine again, maintaining the grittiness from the original. It took time for the first film to gain cult status, and its unique appeal is something that can captivate audiences once more. Avoid incorporating excessive action sequences, gunfights, or making it similar to Marvel-style films with lots of flying stunts and intense fighting scenes. Keep it grounded and true to its original essence.
Keanu Reeves Continues To Prove He Cares & Constantine 2 Will Be Better For It

Stormare acknowledges that Reeves’ statements were based on rumors, but Reeves’ firm stance on the script demonstrates his commitment to exceed expectations in his movie projects, a trait he has displayed through the John Wick series by performing his own stunts and creating unique action sequences. Similarly, Reeves has accepted lower wages so films could be made, and he ensures everyone involved receives appropriate credit – a pattern that suggests Constantine 2 will also benefit from his dedication.
Stormare is on point when he says that Constantine 2 doesn’t have to follow the typical pattern of comic book movies. Instead of being a Superman-esque hero, this character functions more like a hard-boiled detective with a touch of magic. Given DC’s penchant for taking risks in projects such as Mike Flanagan’s Clayface film, it seems likely that Constantine 2 starring Keanu Reeves would be a smashing success. This could provide some reassurance to the studios as James Gunn’s plans for the DCU start unfolding.
