You Might Be Paying More for PS5 Games Than Other People

Some PlayStation 5 owners are reporting different prices for the same games on the PlayStation Store. This comes at a time when many in the gaming world are discussing rising costs for consoles and games, as players are feeling the pinch of increased everyday expenses. It appears PlayStation 5 game prices might now be changing depending on the individual user.

Recently, a lot of the conversation about game affordability has focused on Microsoft and its Xbox Game Pass. Even a co-founder of Xbox has spoken out against the recent price increase for Game Pass, which follows other price changes for Xbox consoles. While Microsoft’s pricing strategies are getting a lot of attention, some PlayStation Store listings have also been updated, and fans are noticing that these changes seem to vary from person to person.

The PlayStation Store May Be Experimenting With Dynamic Pricing

Back in 2024, a Reddit user named Walking_Immortal noticed the price of Astro Bot on the PlayStation Store changing by as much as 25% depending on the person viewing it. Now, another Reddit user, DarXIV, has shared screenshots showing that Red Dead Redemption 2: Ultimate Edition cost $5 less on their spouse’s PlayStation account compared to their own. Although the game was on sale for everyone, the size of the discount varied between users, even though they were using the same currency and were in the same location. This potential for personalized pricing might upset some players, especially since Sony increased the price of the PS5 console earlier in 2025.

We’ve seen different prices for games before, like when Embark Studios lowered the price of ARC Raiders in certain countries based on local economies. However, the recent price changes on PlayStation seem less about economic factors and more about marketing. Players in the same region are seeing different prices, which is unusual. While it’s not clear why this is happening, it could be an attempt to encourage purchases by offering lower prices to players who might be more likely to buy if the price is right.

Okay, so Sony hasn’t officially said if they’re trying out this whole dynamic pricing thing where prices change based on who you are, but it’s looking that way. Honestly, it’s a bit frustrating. Everyone’s already worried GTA 6 might be $100, and now the idea that some people could pay less than others for the same game just doesn’t sit right with me. Hopefully, it’s just a mistake or a test, and PlayStation won’t actually make this permanent. But until Sony actually tells us what’s going on, it’s all just speculation.
