The new ‘Plus Moves’ feature in Pokemon Legends: Z-A is causing some confusion among players. While the game plays similarly to Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Plus Moves offer a consistent, though somewhat puzzling, way to boost the power of Pokemon attacks.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A sold over 5.8 million copies in its first week, according to The Pokémon Company. While this is less than the 6.5 million copies sold during the first week of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it’s a strong start. Z-A sold approximately 1.8 million more copies in its first week than Pokémon X and Y did when those games were first released.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Plus Moves Are Confusing Players
Despite a large player base, many are still discovering how to use Plus Moves in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. These are enhanced versions of regular moves that deal extra damage, have a wider range, or last longer, but require a specific input to activate. Over the past week, players have been sharing on platforms like Twitter and Reddit that they didn’t realize they needed to press the Plus button on their Switch or Switch 2 controller while aiming at enemy Pokemon to use these powerful moves. While the game does offer instructions on how to use Plus Moves, some players admit they missed them, with a few even reaching the end of the game before discovering this feature.
If you’re unfamiliar, Plus Moves are special moves Pokémon can learn either by gaining levels or by using Seeds of Mastery at the Justice Dojo. You’ll recognize them by a small plus symbol next to the move’s name on the status screen. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Mega Evolved Pokémon will use Plus Moves automatically. Even if your Pokémon isn’t Mega Evolved, you can still use Plus Moves by pressing the plus button, but it will use up about 25% of your Mega Power meter.
While most players haven’t been significantly hindered by not using Plus Moves – many even found it funny and still finished the game – some have run into issues. A few players admitted to overtraining their Pokémon because they felt underpowered in certain fights. Others who didn’t learn about Plus Moves believe the game’s many beginner tips in Pokemon Legends: Z-A were overwhelming, and they likely skipped over the explanation during the lengthy tutorials.
