In 2025, the limited-edition Astro Bot DualSense controller is set for a return, with its creator hinting at an exciting new element. Following its swift sell-out after launch in September 2024, enthusiasts of Astro Bot will have another opportunity to acquire this distinctive accessory as part of their PS5 setup.
2024 saw Astro Bot, a widely celebrated game with an impressive 95 average critic score on OpenCritic, take home Game of the Year over notable competitors such as Metaphor: Refantazio and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. This platformer has captivated audiences with its meticulously designed levels, nods to classic PlayStation games, and gameplay reminiscent of Super Mario. Intriguingly, fans began clamoring for an Astro Bot PS5 controller after spotting a DualSense in the original trailer. Responding to this demand, Sony created a special-edition peripheral, which soon became available on the PlayStation Store.
At Sony’s State of Play event in June 2025, they announced a re-release of the Astro Bot DualSense controller for PS5. As per the game’s director, Nicolas Doucent, this new version will feature a unique twist on the touch pad. The specifics about the update or when pre-orders might start are still unknown, but fans have been advised to monitor the PlayStation store closely. Similar to the initial release, it’s expected that there won’t be much stock available, and it remains to be seen if the price of $79.99 will remain the same.
The Astro Bot DualSense Controller Is Coming Back in 2025, With a Twist
During the livestream, not only did we learn about the comeback of the coveted DualSense controller, but also some exciting updates for the popular platformer, Astro Bot. Specifically, new challenge levels will be added to the game on July 10, increasing the total number of planets from 81 to 90. Since its debut, Astro Bot has consistently received downloadable content, with a March update introducing the incredibly difficult Hard to Bear level and a bot modeled after The Order 1886’s Sir Galahad.
In February, Sony’s President Hiroki Totoki announced that the company intends to produce additional games similar to “Astro Bot,” prioritizing family-friendly content. By November 2024, over 1.5 million units of “Astro Bot” had been sold, generating revenue ten times its initial investment. There’s also speculation about a movie adaptation, as Sony has shown interest in the project.
