In the Pokemon TCG Pocket version, Dragon-type cards are scarce, with just four Dragon Pokemon presently available in the game. Three out of these four share the same evolutionary line, which could make it challenging to construct a competitive deck centered around this theme due to the restricted selection of Pokemon. Additionally, most of them possess dual types, further reducing the options for building such a deck.
In this tutorial, I’m going to help you construct a standout Dragon-type deck within Pokemon Pocket, demonstrating its capabilities in PvP battles. I’ll provide insights on how best to leverage its strengths, as well as discussing the challenges facing Dragon decks within the current meta. Lastly, I’ll offer suggestions for addressing their weaknesses so you can maximize your success with this deck.
The Best Dragon-Type Type
At present, the only Dragon-type deck that offers a reasonable level of reliability is the one featuring Dragonite and Druddigon. To emulate this configuration, ensure you incorporate Dragonite’s Evolution sequence (starting with Dratini), several Druddigons, as well as these Trainer Cards: Leaf, Sabrina, Potion, Poke Ball, Professor’s Research, and X Speed.
Here’s how to build the Dragonite-Druddigon deck:
Card | Quantity |
---|---|
Dratini | 2 |
Dragonair | 2 |
Dragonite | 2 |
Druddigon | 2 |
Leaf | 2 |
Sabrina | 2 |
Professor’s Research | 2 |
Poke Ball | 2 |
Potion | 2 |
X Speed | 2 |
Deck Synergies:
- You start by tanking damage with Druddigon.
- While Druddigon is Active, you build up Dragonite on the Bench.
- Once you’re Dragonite is ready, you Retreat Druddigon with Leaf and start attacking.
Due to Dragonite’s area-of-effect (AoE) ability, it’s quite probable that you’ll secure victory using just a few attacks from Dragonite.
Dragon-Type Decks’ Performance in the Meta
I examined the last ten Pokemon Pocket tournaments and discovered that there was just a single participant using a Dragon-type deck. Unfortunately, this one Dragon deck ended up in 127th place, which raises some concerns about the effectiveness of this playstyle.
Nevertheless, one particular Pokemon of the Dragon type stands out in competitive and effective decks: Druddigon. Unlike Dragonite, which can be somewhat unwieldy, Druddigon offers straightforward usefulness. It can serve as a sturdy barrier that gradually whittles down the opponent’s HP without any Energy requirement.
Why Dragon Decks Aren’t Competitive
As a dedicated fan, I’ve noticed two primary factors that have hindered Dragon decks from making a bigger impact in the current meta:
1) The challenge lies in the fact that you can only work with a select few Pokemon, namely just four, which restricts the deck-building possibilities.
2) It’s also important to note that the key figures of this archetype, Dragonite and Druddigon, are dual-typed Pokémon. This becomes problematic in our beloved game, Pokémon, due to the random nature of Energy distribution, which is determined by chance.
How to Counter Dragon Decks
Most Dragon decks typically employ the same tactic: they set up barriers to hinder opponents and develop their bench. To outsmart such strategies, consider constructing a deck that focuses on attacking the bench, featuring cards like Hitmonlee, Greninja, or Zebstrika. These characters can circumvent the Dragon decks’ defensive walls, enabling you to inflict early damage and disrupt their Evolutions.
It’s worth mentioning that Dragons in the Pokemon TCG Pocket aren’t vulnerable to any other types. This means you should depend more on abilities and synergies rather than exploiting type weaknesses. An effective strategy against a stall-oriented deck could be attacking their Bench with snipers instead.
