In this latest installment of One Piece’s SBS (Sunday Bonus Stamp) in Volume 111, the creator, Eiichiro Oda, has been sharing an abundance of thrilling tidbits. Often, these SBS entries can seem like playful banter and jokes between Oda and his devoted fans, but there’s always a wealth of intriguing insights to be found.

Every so often, a question arises that adds layers upon layers to the captivating tales we follow – and this time, it’s no exception! Our favorite manga artist, Oda, has graciously provided an intriguing insight into the history of Eustass Kid, unveiling the enigma behind his acquisition of a Poneglyph from Big Mom. Now, as fans, we can piece together the puzzle of what truly transpired in the past with newfound clarity.

Kid’s Attack On Big Mom’s Ship

  • Eustass Kid Challenged The Big Mom Pirates On Multiple Occasions
  • Kid Managed To Take A Poneglyph Rubbing From A Commander

During the Whole Cake Island storyline, fans learned that Eustass Kid, leader of the Kid Pirates, had confronted the Big Mom Pirates at some stage. As per Brulee, Kid was compelled to retreat. Brulee added that only Urouge managed to put up a good fight against the Big Mom Pirates; he successfully bypassed Snack but ultimately lost to Cracker.

The only one who managed to put up any sort of a fight was Urouge, the Mad Monk. — Brulee

During the Wano Country Arc, particularly at the Prisoner Mine, it became clear that Kid didn’t flee from Whole Cake Island without purpose. He inflicted harm on one of her commanders and obtained what he desired. The notion of Kid having escaped was actually a misconception. Initially, fans were unaware as to who Kid hurt and what he stole from them. As the arc progressed, Oda provided more details about the situation. It turned out that the Kid Pirates targeted Big Mom’s ship for the Road Poneglyph. They successfully acquired a copy of the Poneglyph, and since their mission was accomplished, there was no need to confront Big Mom head-on in combat.

Hooray! I just finished reading One Piece Volume 111, and let me tell you, it was a game-changer! It turns out Urouge wasn’t the only one who took down a Big Mom Pirates Officer – Kid did too! And get this, he even got himself a Poneglyph from their crew. Can’t wait to see where this leads in the next volume!

How Kid Defeated Commander Snack Of The Big Mom Pirates

Kid Beat Snack

During a time skip, Eustass Kid – a powerful member of the Worst Generation – attacked a ship belonging to Big Mom Pirates. It was initially thought that Kid had fled after the attack. However, it turns out that Kid didn’t run; instead, he fought Snack and emerged victorious. This is puzzling since Oda previously mentioned that Urouge was the one who defeated Snack. Now, it seems that Snack faced defeat twice, not just once. This twist also helps explain why Snack was subsequently demoted from his role as Sweet Commander, making for an intriguing turn of events.

Here is what Oda had to say in his SBS:

Greetings! Dear Observer, I’m curious to learn more about the incident involving the young man, Kid, and his supposed theft of Big Mom’s Poneglyph. If you have any insights or details, I’d be delighted to hear them! Wishing you a smooch-filled day!

Eiichiro Oda: Oh, your adorable mistake in Japanese! You must be from France, right? I’ll send you a kiss too! Now, let me cut to the chase. He attacked one of Big Mom’s warships and defeated Commander Snack and his crew onboard. In return for sparing Snack, he received a copy of the Road Poneglyph. That’s all there is to it. It was also hinted that Kid fled upon seeing Big Mom, but in truth, his aim was just to grab the Poneglyph.

It’s plainly evident from the response: Kid deliberately assaulted Ship, which was owned by Snack, and the attack was intended. The motive behind this act was to seize the Road Poneglyph that was in the possession of the Big Mom Pirates. Incidentally, Snack had a copy of the Road Poneglyph on his person for some unknown reason.

Originally, a menace was posed to someone’s life, yet in an unexpected turn, the threatener agreed to show mercy if granted the task of rubbing a Poneglyph instead. Though the scenario may seem peculiar, it now makes sense due to Oda’s recent clarification on how Kid acquired his initial Road Poneglyph copy.

Towards the conclusion of the Wano Country Saga, Kid too acquired his second Road Poneglyph. Throughout the events of the Wano arc, Kid engaged in conflict alongside Big Mom and Kaido’s alliance. Notably, he assisted Law during the fight against Big Mom and eventually defeated her – a significant accomplishment for Kid that underscored his immense power. This triumph also led to an impressive bounty increase of 3 billion berries. Subsequently, Kid was granted a replica of Kaido’s Road Poneglyph by Law, as they both played crucial roles in the battle against the Yonko.

What Happened To Kid’s Poneglyphs?

Kid’s Road Poneglyphs Were Taken By Shanks

Despite Kid’s successful acquisition of the Road Poneglyphs, misfortune seemed to dog him. During his visit to Elbaf, he encountered Shanks. Intrigued by Kid’s determination, Shanks challenged Kid and his fleet in a battle. It was evident that Kid was serious about his intentions. As Kid prepared to wreak havoc with the power of Damned Punk, Shanks intervened swiftly, employing the mighty Kamusari, a technique passed down from Roger. In the ensuing conflict, both Kid and Killer were defeated in an instant. To save their Captain’s life, the crew quickly handed over the copies of the Road Poneglyphs they had obtained. With this exchange, Shanks advanced one step closer to the One Piece itself.

Regarding Kid, he’s currently devoid of Road Poneglyphs, even though he exerted tremendous effort by vanquishing a Yonko Commander and another Yonko. Essentially, this means he’s out of the running for the One Piece. Sad as it may seem, Kid lacked the necessary prowess to overcome Shanks, thereby preventing him from ascending to the title of Pirate King. Whether he will have a part in future events following the timeskip is yet to be determined, but at present, his mission has been accomplished.

Fans can access One Piece digitally through Viz Media platforms, where they can read the official and free series installments on Shonen Jump and Manga Plus apps. The forthcoming chapter of One Piece, titled One Piece 1141, is scheduled to launch on March 2, 2025.
