Spoilers for The Walking Dead series and the comics.
Summary
- The Walking Dead series is praised for its compelling storytelling and diverse cast.
- A heartbroken fan used AI to reimagine a more wholesome ending for Rick and Carl.
- In the Walking Dead comics, Carl outlives Rick and takes on a leadership role.
“Viewers turned to ‘The Walking Dead’ on AMC for either its gory zombies or exceptional narrative skills, but the series managed to enthrall audiences globally. Although some admire the show’s powerful portrayal of human survival in a post-apocalyptic scenario, it’s safe to say that the enduring popularity of the drama wouldn’t have been possible without its rich and gifted cast, whose nuanced performances brought depth to the complex character dynamics skillfully woven into the narrative fabric.
The Walking Dead explored what life could be like in a world overrun by zombies and highlighted the importance of human connection even amidst hardship and uncertainty. Despite the numerous brutal and terrifying antagonists, the series also depicted beautiful relationships such as Carol and Daryl, Maggie and Glenn, Tara and Denise, or Rick and Michonne. Many beloved characters met tragic ends, making a long list that resembles an endless obituary. However, one particular father-son relationship was not well-received by many viewers, leading one fan to imagine a different conclusion for the storyline.
The Walking Fan Alters Rick and Carl’s Ending
On the subreddit for “The Walking Dead,” a fan who felt disappointed about how Rick and Carl’s story concluded in the show, used AI assistance to rewrite a happier ending. User SpiderrDude transformed an image to depict an aged Rick and Carl living out their lives contentedly together. In this alternative scenario, Carl sports a beard but keeps the sheriff’s hat he received from Rick during his recovery at the farm, while Rick has gray hair and a few more wrinkles, showing the passage of time.
In the original comic series of ‘The Walking Dead’, created by Robert Kirkman, the storyline for Rick Grimes deviates significantly from the TV show version. Instead of being gunned down, as seen on screen, Rick’s character continues to age in the comics while Carl assumes a leadership role. Interestingly, in the comics, Carl remains alive longer than his father, Rick. As many fans recall, Carl was bitten by a walker during season 8 of the TV show after attempting to save Siddiq. In an emotional moment with Rick, Michonne, and Judith, Carl chose to end his life by shooting himself in the church rather than becoming a walker.
This upcoming year, you can expect the second season of “The Walking Dead: Dead City” to premiere. At present, no specific release date has been announced.
