You Won’t Believe How the Steam Deck OLED Size Compares to the Nintendo Switch 2!

Summary

  • German YouTube user Steam Dad compared the Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam Deck OLED, noting the size differences.
  • The Nintendo Switch 2, releasing June 5, is bigger than the original Switch with detachable Joy-Con 2 controllers.
  • While the Switch 2 is overall smaller than Steam Deck OLED, its screen is a little bigger than Valve’s handheld.

As a thrilled fan, I’ve been lucky enough to lay my hands on the Nintendo Switch 2 before its official release. In comparison to the Steam Deck OLED, I found the new console to be more compact and portable. Anticipation for the Switch 2 has been building ever since its announcement on January 16, and now, on June 5, we’ll finally get our hands on Nintendo’s latest mainline console, a successor to the beloved Nintendo Switch. Interestingly, when the dimensions of the Nintendo Switch 2 were unveiled alongside its detachable Joy-Con 2 controllers, it was clear that this new model would be more spacious than its predecessor.

As a dedicated fan eagerly awaiting the Switch 2’s release, I found myself pleasantly surprised when Valve unveiled its own portable gaming system – the Steam Deck – during the long eight-year gap. Reminiscent of the Nintendo Switch in its tablet form factor, this handheld device enables Steam users to carry their PC game libraries with them wherever they go.

Approximately a year after the initial 2022 launch, Valve rolled out an updated version of the Steam Deck – the OLED model – boasting a sharper screen and additional enhancements. Despite maintaining the same size as the original, the new OLED model shaves off a bit of weight.

Approaching the upcoming launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, many gamers find themselves pondering its similarities to Valve’s Steam Deck. A notable individual who experienced a hands-on with the new device at a special event in Berlin is Steam Dad, a popular German YouTube gamer. He recently published a video discussing his impressions, including a comparison between the Nintendo Switch 2 and the larger, thicker Steam Deck OLED model.

Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam Deck Sizes

  • Nintendo Switch 2: Approximately 4.5 inches tall, 10.7 inches wide, and 0.55 inches thick (with Joy-Con 2 controllers attached).
  • Steam Deck OLED: 4.6 inches tall, 11.7 inches wide, and 1.8 inches thick.

It’s worth mentioning that the screen on the Switch 2 occupies a larger portion of the console compared to the Steam Deck, leading some Reddit users on r/NintendoSwitch2 to point out that a significant amount of space in the Steam Deck is empty to facilitate better airflow within the device. Furthermore, it has been noted by others that the Steam Deck boasts additional features such as touchpads, which not only consume more space but also necessitate the placement of its face buttons at a different location than the Switch 2’s arrangement under the joysticks.

The screen on the Switch 2 has been likened to others due to being an LCD, a choice Nintendo executives attribute to advancements in LCD technology since the launch of the first Switch. Yet, they assure us that the Switch 2 will be capable of High Dynamic Range (HDR), a feature lacking in the original Switch, even its OLED model. There’s speculation that Nintendo may introduce an OLED version of the Switch 2 as well, following the example set by the original Switch and Valve with the Steam Deck.
