In the game “Avowed,” Thalla the Taskmaster is a formidable boss encountered in the initial significant region, Dawnshore, situated within Paradis. Your combat with Thalla ensues following your skirmish with the Sparrowhawks who are causing trouble for the Apothecary merchant named Grysca. You can first interact with Thalla near the stairs leading to Grysca’s shop, but he won’t engage in battle until you’ve delivered the emperor’s missive to the Ambassador and dealt with Wetenu and his crew at the shop. Initially, you may have a conversation with Thalla, but he’ll only fight once certain conditions are met. Thalla possesses several powerful attacks that can be easily dodged, and upon defeating him, you’ll receive some rewarding loot.
1. When I engaged him, I was at Level 7 and found it relatively straightforward. You should feel comfortable taking him on somewhere between Levels 5 to 8, depending on your own skill level and the difficulty settings you prefer.
2. Initially, I didn’t anticipate any confrontation when I visited the Apothecary, but as you approach the shop, a cutscene and dialogue exchange with Wetenu will automatically occur. Make sure to prepare yourself beforehand.
3. If you’re playing a Ranger or Fighter character in Avowed, the Evasive dodge passive skill can prove beneficial when dealing with Thalla, as you’ll frequently need to dodge outside of his attack range due to this ability.
Where To Find Thalla The Taskmaster Boss (Location)
Thalla The Taskmaster Is The Leader Of The Sparrowhawks In Paradis
Thalla the Taskmaster isn’t elusive, but initially I wasn’t certain he was a boss because we didn’t clash immediately. He can be found on the eastern side of Paradis, specifically at the foot of the stairs outside The Mermaid’s Den. To reach him, use fast travel to the Eastern Paradis Gate Beacon and head north. Once you ascend the first set of stairs and follow the road straight ahead, you’ll spot a large ogre on your right. Speak with this ogre to learn that the Sparrowhawks haven’t initiated an attack (for now), allowing you to explore the area at leisure.
Following my ventures in completing several optional tasks, I ultimately chose to progress with the primary mission by conversing with the Ambassador and presenting him with the emperor’s letter. Upon wrapping up this task, I headed over to restock on some potions at the Apothecary, but was caught off guard when a fight ensued. If you visit the Apothecary after speaking with the Ambassador, a conversation will initiate between you and Wetenu, along with his group of Sparrowhawk thugs. They are bullying Grysca (the merchant), and to defeat Thalla, you’ll need to tackle the Sparrowhawks first. Eliminate them before Thalla arrives for a smoother encounter.
How To Beat Thalla the Taskmaster (Weakness & Best Strategy)
Use Vines To Hold The Ogre In Place
During the fight, Thalla will dash swiftly through the narrow passageway once the battle begins. His primary attacks consist of a throwable boulder at long range, powerful ground slams causing widespread damage, and a simple club swing.
An efficient tactic involves having Kai act as a shield against Thalla’s onslaught as much as feasible, regardless if you’re using a Ranger character in the game “Avowed” or have Marius in your party. Utilize Tanglefoot or Binding Roots (preferably both) to restrain Thalla in place. Thalla’s key vulnerability is his slowness, and predictable movements make him easier to counter.
In this battle, maneuverability proves crucial since you’ll spend a good deal of time dodging his ground slams by moving around, or “kiting.” Given the compact space, it’s beneficial to corner him using thorny vines and coordinate ranged or close-combat attacks with his swings to fill up his Stun Meter more quickly.
I managed to get in close, strike him repeatedly, and even dodged out of the way before he could unleash another slam. Despite this, I had enough room to step back and evade the smash radius. His stone throw attack is easily avoided as he makes a clear wind-up gesture before launching it.
The frost build-up will make Thalla move even more sluggishly than he currently does, and it works exceptionally well when paired with Tanglefoot or Binding Roots. I employed the fundamental Grimoire chill blades along with a Fine +2 Drawn in Winter Axe from the Watcher’s Mirror Ancient Memory. This combination repeatedly froze him and allowed me to charge an attack, while significantly increasing his Stun Meter. Additionally, I experimented with a fire approach (Sheathed in Summer +2 and Fan of Flames Grimoire attack) that was equally potent at gradually reducing his health while entangling him and dodging.
As a fan, I’d say that in the game Avowed, Thalla the Taskmaster isn’t overly challenging if you leverage his slow pace and keep him restrained as much as possible. Elemental damage works particularly well against him, with Frost being the most effective choice. By combining these elements with vine abilities, you can immobilize Thalla for a significant portion of the fight, providing you with additional time to retreat when he prepares for a ground smash or club strike. After he’s defeated, Thalla drops valuable crafting materials such as Adra and a Paradisan Ladder, along with ten Silver Fennings.
