8. Wadatsumi

The Clumsy But Pure-Hearted Wadatsumi Eventually Becomes An Ally Of The Straw Hats

While Wadatsumi doesn’t feature extensively across the series compared to some other characters, he does have a small but significant character development. Unlike many others, Wadatsumi isn’t easily forgettable. Particularly during the Fishman Island arc, Wadatsumi proved himself as a major inconvenience for the Straw Hats with his imposing size and robustness, causing them considerable trouble.

However, upon recognizing his mistake, Wadatsumi makes a return at Whole Cake Island to save the Straw Hats from being destroyed by Big Mom’s forces. Wadatsumi’s change of heart and menacing design have made him somewhat of an underrated fishman who deserves a lot more credit than he often gets.

7. Hachi

Hachi’s Whacky Appearance And Close Bond With Luffy Have Made Him A Fan Favorite

It might seem unimaginable now, but there was a point when Hacchi eagerly prepared to clash with the Straw Hats as an adversary. Although he’s an octopus, his multi-sword fighting style is captivating to witness, yet it’s apparent that he doesn’t take great pleasure in combat. Post his departure from Arlong’s crew, Hachi encounters the Straw Hats once more in Sabaody, but this time around with a much milder and friendly demeanor.

In this tale, it’s Hachi who leads the Straw Hat crew through Sabaody. That is, until the detestable Charlos, a Celestial Dragon, shoots him down. But Luffy, in typical fashion, delivers a fierce punch to Charlos as retaliation. Although Hachi might not be central to the grand storyline of One Piece, fans adore him for his quirky design, distinctive fighting style, and the humor he brings each time he reappears.

6. Hody Jones

Hody Is An Intriguing Character Who Highlights How Deep Human Discrimination Runs Among Fishmen

In contrast to the prejudice he harbors towards humans, never experiencing discrimination himself, Hody Jones’ intense hatred stems from a misconception. In the storyline where harmony between humans and fishmen is being emphasized, Hody offers an interesting perspective that such views have become excessively narrow-minded. His plan to annihilate humanity due to a single incident makes Hody a captivating yet potentially dangerous antagonist, and his aggressive fighting style against Luffy, particularly when he goes all out, is quite thrilling to observe.

In the series, Kawamatsu doesn’t speak much. On his initial appearance, all viewers see are his eyes glimmering in the darkness as he sits solitarily in a Udon Prison cell. This immediately sparks curiosity about his character. Later, when he’s freed from imprisonment, it’s unveiled that he was one of Kozuki Oden’s esteemed retainers. As a fishman, Kawamatsu faced considerable hardships upon arriving in Wano and narrowly escaped execution until Oden intervened.

From my perspective as a passionate fan, it’s crucial to acknowledge that while fishmen are frequently portrayed as discriminators, they too often become victims of violence when venturing beyond their own island. The unique kappa design of Kawamatsu adds to his distinctiveness, and his swift, spectacular fighting style, vividly demonstrated during the Onigashima raid, leaves an indelible impression.

Many people, quite logically, believed Jack the Drought was just a massive human who ate a fruit granting him the power to transform into a mammoth. It wasn’t until much later that it was disclosed that Kaido’s right-hand man turned out to be a fishman.

A character with a Zoan Devil Fruit, specifically a fishman like Jack, is already intriguing, but what makes him truly captivating is his alliance with a Yonko. Discussing the colossal figure of Jack isn’t complete without acknowledging his significant role in the narrative, particularly the devastation he wrought on Zou, an event that transpired just days before the Straw Hats arrived. Although other characters like King and Queen might have garnered more attention later, Jack remains a fishman who sparks ongoing conversation among fans even today.

Arlong Is The Embodiment Of The Fishmen’s Hatred For Humanity

At the start of the series, Arlong is introduced with a deep-seated animosity towards humans that’s easy to discern. He uses this hostility to seize control over an entire island. Observing Fisher Tiger’s death at the hands of humans filled Arlong with a bitter hatred for all humans, believing them to be nothing but cruel and merciless beings who deserve either death or exploitation. Arlong, with his intense and captivating backstory, coupled with his formidable fighting style that tested Luffy to his utmost limits, has earned him the title of beloved villain by many fans. Here’s hoping we get to see him again in the series at some point down the line.

As I found myself bound under the rule of the World Government, my perspective towards humanity began to unravel into a complex tapestry. Initially, I harbored immense contempt for them, seeing how they’d treated me and my fellow captives. Yet, that all shifted when I took aboard a young girl named Koala, another former slave on my ship.

The transformation in my feelings became more pronounced as I cared for her. I could see the innocence and resilience reflected in her eyes, qualities that were often lost amidst the chaos of our enslavement. However, upon returning her to her village, a group of Marines ambushed me in an unexpected assault, taking my life.

This event left an indelible mark on me, as it served as a grim reminder of the harsh reality that surrounded us. Yet, even in the face of such adversity, there was still hope – symbolized by the girl I had grown to care for deeply.

The death of the tiger at the hands of the Marines leaves a deep, lasting impression on the world and the fishmen, leading to consequences such as Arlong’s bitter resentment towards humans and Hody’s relentless pursuit to eliminate humanity. This tragic event serves as a symbol of the unrelenting cycle of hostility and retribution that these two factions find difficult to break free from. Amongst all the backstories in the series, his is one of the most poignant, impactful, and crucial.

From Disgraced Warlord To A Member Of The Straw Hats, It’s Been An Absolute Blast Watching Jinbe’s Journey Thus Far

In the narrative of “One Piece,” Jinbe enters the story just prior to the Marineford War, and is imprisoned as a disgraced member of the Shichibukai. At first glance, it appears he might be a villain, but when he participates in the assault on Marineford, it’s Jinbe who repeatedly risks his own life to shield Luffy from harm, like when he defended him against Akainu’s attack.

Initially, Jinbe’s allegiance was primarily due to his loyalty towards Ace, Luffy’s brother. However, as the story progressed, Jinbe discovered that Luffy is not only loyal but also incredibly kind-hearted and passionate. His past, involving his association with Fisher Tiger and subsequent enslavement, is explored more deeply in the narrative. On several occasions, we see him demonstrate his powerful fishman karate style, even against formidable foes like Big Mom herself. Since his introduction, Jinbe has been an entertaining character to delve into, and as a new recruit of the Straw Hat crew, viewers can look forward to seeing more of this endearing fishman in future episodes and chapters.
