Zombies are arguably the most thrilling antagonists in video games. The allure of a relentless horde of undead creatures, poised for destruction, lies in the exhilaration of unleashing chaos and gore, and the PS5 offers an excellent platform to experience this.
In this list, we’ll focus on games exclusively available on PlayStation 5, and we’ll use a broad interpretation of the term “zombie,” which includes any character or entity that fits the general description of a zombie. Whether it’s the chaotic fun of four-player cooperative gameplay or some of the most compelling storytelling in pixel art, undead creatures provide an excellent canvas for exceptional gaming experiences.
8. Back 4 Blood
Heritage of Blood
It’s undeniable that the launch of Back 4 Blood fell short of many people’s expectations, but this may be due to the high anticipation following the legendary Left 4 Dead 2, which Turtle Rock Studios played a significant role in creating. However, Turtle Rock managed to deliver a contemporary take on the four-player cooperative zombie shooter that temporarily quenched fans’ decades-old thirst for such games.
Following numerous improvements and enhancements, the game is currently in a rather satisfactory state. Sharing the experience with a couple of friends, “Back 4 Blood” offers an exceptional level of entertainment that only a few other games can match. Immerse yourself into a thrilling zombie chaos for a fun-filled weekend escape!
7. Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster
Zombie Journalist Extraordinaire
Back in the day, who would’ve thought that old-school Dead Rising from Capcom would become such a massive hit? It’s all set inside this zombie-infested mall, reminiscent of Romero’s classics, and I, as Frank West, am on a mission to rack up a jaw-dropping number of undead kills while desperately trying to outrun the impending apocalypse.
The game Dead Rising is recognized for its continuous countdown timer, creating a sense of urgency as players explore a progressively chaotic environment armed with outlandishly brutal weapons. The remastered edition stands out with its unique, slapstick appeal, setting it apart in the gaming world and positioning it among the top Dead Rising titles that have been launched.
6. Dying Light 2
Parkour the Dead
In a groundbreaking move, the initial release of “Dying Light” was founded on an innovative yet captivating concept: what if a parkour-centric open-world zombie game existed? By merging the fluid parkour mechanics from “Mirror’s Edge” with the pulse-pounding zombie violence reminiscent of films like “28 Days Later”, “Dying Light” brought a much-needed twist to the ever-growing genre of zombie video games.
Dying Light 2 builds upon what made the original great and takes it to a whole new level. With the addition of ziplines, parachutes, an enhanced combat system, role-playing game mechanics, faction interactions, and a visually stunning world, Techland’s innovative formula from 2014 has reached its pinnacle in this installment.
5. Dead Island 2
With Stars In Their Eyes
As a die-hard fan, I can’t sugarcoat it: Dead Island 2 had one heck of a rocky development journey. It seemed to leap from studio to studio like a zombie chasing its prey, and for a moment there, things looked so grim that many of us thought it would never see the light of day.
Nevertheless, it indeed appeared, immersing gamers in a chaotic post-apocalyptic depiction of Los Angeles populated by vicious creatures known as biters. Players are tasked with traversing an exaggerated reality characterized by its eccentric arsenals, peculiar characters, and lethal top-tier zombies.
4. Resident Evil Village
Werewolves and Zombies Don’t Mix
In today’s world, being a fan of Resident Evil is a unique pleasure, given that the series experienced a downturn in the early 2010s. Today, each new installment offers fresh innovations on the zombie survival theme, as demonstrated by Resident Evil: Village, which features not just zombies, but also robots, vampires, werewolves, giant infants, fish monsters, and virtually anything except a kitchen sink.
Despite being over-the-top, flamboyant, and eerily Gothic, it’s irresistible to horror enthusiasts. Every aspect of the game is crafted to make horror aficionados yelp with joy, though its exaggerated flair might have driven some players away. However, it’s challenging to find any contemporary zombie games that push boundaries quite as much as Capcom does. As a result, modern Resident Evil games stand out among the best in the series.
3. Dead Space (2023)
Zombified Xeno-Horror
It’s tough not to have sympathy for the Dead Space franchise, a series of games that demonstrated immense promise but was cut short prematurely as it grappled with finding its consistent tone. Fortunately, in 2023, Motive Studios were given the chance to reimagine the original game from scratch, and they proved just how much undiscovered potential it still harbored.
In the game Dead Space, players assume the character of Isaac Clarke, an engineer who embarks on a mission to board the colossal spaceship Ishimura in search of his missing girlfriend. Accompanied by a toolkit brimming with engineering equipment, the journey takes a grim turn as the ship is overrun with Necromorphs – a terrifying twist on the classic zombie. The Necromorph’s design adds an element of fear that makes it one of the most effective horror games in the zombie genre available on PS5 today.
2. The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered
Fungus-Based Freaks
Since its debut, “The Last of Us: Part Two” has sparked much debate, given the unique design and story choices it presents. However, setting aside the controversy, it stands as a daring, impressive, and artistically innovative game that challenges players by placing them in uncomfortable situations that are rarely found in video games.
The fungal-infected ‘zombies’ in this apocalypse are a significant factor behind its success. These creatures, such as the clickers and new prowlers, have made a lasting impact as terrifying antagonists, with the clickers becoming instantly recognizable horror icons. The innovative sequel from Naughty Dog is unlikely to be forgotten quickly, and it’s challenging to find PS5 games that rival its quality when it comes to zombie themes.
1. Resident Evil 4 (2023)
Los Ganados Extravaganza
Without a doubt, there is no other game that can surpass this list. Not only is it frequently ranked among the best zombie games ever made, but also among the greatest games in history. The original Resident Evil 4, essentially a timeless classic in video gaming, offers no less than chilling coolness, and the latest remake does not fail to impress. It refines what was suboptimal, updates what worked, and presents it all via the visually stunning RE engine.
Although the Ganados might not strictly be classified as zombies, their actions undeniably align with this category. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting depiction of a horror scenario associated with zombies than the iconic opening village survival scene in gaming lore. The Resident Evil 4 game stands out for its action, suspense, memorable boss battles, and emotional depth, solidifying it as an exceptional choice for the best playable zombie game on PS5.
