The Origins And Story Behind The Hand Demon

A Twist Of Fate Made Him A Demon, Imprisoned By Sakonji

During the Edo Period, Muzan transformed the Hand Demon, and it fed on a human daily to survive. However, its destructive spree was halted when Water Hashira, Sakonji Urokodaki apprehended it and confined it atop Mount Fujikasane, surrounded by wisteria to prevent escape. The intention was for the Hand Demon to serve as a challenge for those vying to become Demon Slayers. Sadly, Sakonji’s scheme had unintended consequences, as the Hand Demon developed a fierce animosity towards the Water Hashira and slaughtered numerous Demon Slayers on its path. It took particular pleasure in eliminating the soon-to-be Demon Slayers who were under Sakonji’s tutelage. The Hand Demon was able to identify these trainees by the warding masks that Sakonji had provided them before they entered the selection process.

Over a span of forty-seven years, an intense loathing developed towards Sakonji, as the Demon Hand claimed the lives of thirteen of his disciples and around fifty other potential Demon Slayers. As time progressed, this demonic entity morphed from resembling a human with demonic traits to a massive, grotesque creature with numerous arms and hands. With so many appendages, it could shield itself and even walk on them. Its skin turned sickly green and its fingernails were a vibrant red, adding to its already frightening appearance. It was also the culprit behind the death of Sabito, a friend of the current Water Pillar. When he was human, the Hand Demon relied heavily on his elder brother, seeking comfort by holding his hand whenever he felt fear.

A Tragedy Even For A Demon

The Rise And Fall Of The Hand Demon, Explained

As a demon, he kept track of time in an attempt to comprehend his confinement within Mount Fujikasane. However, when Tanjiro disclosed that an entire epoch had elapsed, the Hand Demon grew more enraged, realizing he’d missed out on an entire era due to his captivity. With no other options, he was forced to feed on humans to sustain himself, and his animosity and bitterness towards Sakonji further intensified his hatred and violence. Although demons slaughtering humans is unethical, they themselves are victims of their destiny. They possess minimal control over their cravings, making them slaves to their needs.

In the heart-wrenching climax of the selection process, it was I who struck down the Hand Demon, yet in his final breath, he reached out. Most would have recoiled, but I found myself moved by empathy and grasped the Hand Demon’s hand as he vanished into the ether. Our brief connection stirred memories of his brotherhood and past within him, causing him to crumble away. As I clutched that hand, I prayed fervently, hoping that if this demon were to return in another life, they would find salvation from the darkness that had once consumed them.
