Reading Naruto can sometimes leave even dedicated fans scratching their heads due to its intricate backstory. It’s clear that one of the author, Masashi Kishimoto’s, exceptional talents lies in his world-building abilities.

Initially, the start of Naruto introduces us to a seemingly ordinary kid with an extraordinary dream: to become Hokage. However, as the story unfolds, we discover that Naruto’s past is far more illustrious than anticipated, and he possesses unparalleled potential. This isn’t just due to the events that transpired when he was a baby, but also because of his ancestry. The Uzumaki Clan, from which Naruto hails, traces its roots back to the Otsutsuki Clan.

Why Did the Otsutsuki Clan Come to Earth?

The Otsutsuki Clan was first mentioned towards the end of “Naruto Shippuden,” and both “Boruto: Naruto Next Generations” and “Boruto: Two-Blue Vortex” have expanded upon this clan, leaving several questions still unresolved.

According to what’s been disclosed, members of the Otsutsuki Clan appear to be explorers or exploiters from space, traversing the cosmos in search of Divine Trees (also known as God Trees) which they cultivate and eventually consume their Chakra Fruits. However, there are exceptions to this rule.

Despite the fact that Divine Trees were long believed to be life-giving entities (particularly on Earth), they are actually parasitic trees that drain the planet’s vital energy, gradually causing its demise. Yet, the Otsutsuki choose to inhabit numerous planets to grow these destructive trees for future power and near immortality by consuming the Chakra Fruits that emerge from them.

The visit of Kaguya and Isshiki Otsutsuki to Earth was primarily for cultivating the Divine Tree to yield a Chakra Fruit, as it is customary among the Otsutsuki Clan to invade planets in duos.

Kaguya’s Lineage Branched Into Many Clans

In what we understand, Kaguya belonged to a lower tier of the Otsutsuki clan and was intended to sacrifice herself for the Divine Tree. Instead, she deceived her companion, abandoning him to perish while seizing the Fruit for herself. Isshiki miraculously survived, and his subsequent actions significantly impacted events throughout the storyline.

Enthralled by the allure of this celestial sphere, I found myself captivated, growing increasingly enamored with Earth itself – so much so that love blossomed for a mortal man named Emperor Tenji. Together, we shared an extraordinary bond, one that resulted in the birth of our twin offspring, Hagoromo and Hamura Otsutsuki.

In those days, I was revered as a divine being, my name whispered in hushed tones among the masses. Yet, as time passed, an insatiable hunger consumed me, a longing that could not be quenched. My once pure heart became tainted by an uncontrollable lust, leading to a descent into madness.

Upon the birth of my offspring, they manifested a portion of the chakra and abilities I had acquired from the Chakra Fruit. This revelation stirred a desire within Kaguya to regain all that power for herself, leading her to contemplate their demise.

Instead, Hagoromo and Hamura managed to contain her. Later on, Hagoromo opted to distribute chakra across the Earth peacefully, thereby founding Ninshu, whereas Hamura journeyed to the moon.

The Ancestor of the Uzumaki Clan

As an avid fan, I’d love to share a fascinating piece of information: The Senju, Uzumaki, and Uchiha lineages all trace their roots back to Hagoromo Otsutsuki, a remarkable figure in our lore. This legendary figure had two sons, Indra and Asura. Incredibly, the Senju and Uzumaki clans are direct descendants of Asura Otsutsuki, while the Uchihas can claim Indra as their ancestor.

In a different turn of phrase, it can be said that Indra, being the elder, felt resentment and sought revenge when Hagoromo opted for Asura to succeed him as the head of Ninshu. One reason behind Hagoromo’s disfavor towards Indra was his frequent use of chakra in conflicts; a trait that eventually earned him recognition as the originator of ninjutsu.

Could An Uzumaki Eventually Awaken the Sharingan?

It appears that while Indra received the Sharingan and its advancements from his father, Asura did not. The Sharingan is activated through genetic alterations, presumably caused when Kaguya consumed the Chakra Fruit. Only Hagoromo and later, Indra, seem to have inherited these genetic changes.

In other words, it’s quite rare for an Uzumaki to activate the Sharingan ability; they would need Uchiha lineage or receive a Sharingan eye from an Uchiha.

A number of enthusiasts believe Boruto might eventually perform this action, but they appear to be a small group within the fanbase. Given that Boruto is descended from Kaguya Otsutsuki through both his father (Uzumaki) and mother (Hyuuga), it’s theoretically possible to find justification for such an event, although it seems highly improbable.
